Good cheap PSU source is the switch-mode unit from an old PC. (+12v is on the yellow wires, not the red ones, which are +5v; -ve is black as you'd expect.) Actual output will depend on the unit, but a typical 450W PSU should give you up to 15A. Being switch-mode, they may need a minimum load of an amp or so to give any output. If you don't have one lying about, a visit to your local recycling centre should net you as many as you want for a pound or two each.

Once removed from computer to switch on psu short the green cable to ground (black cable) Otherwise nothing will happen. Disconnecting the short will turn off psu, You can use this for safety interlocks etc.

30 quid! thats not expensive! I think for a decent 12v psu with 8A output is pretty damn good

If you need to ask the question 'whats so good about a laser' - you won't understand the answer.
