    Default TEC/peltier question?

in the below pic, think of the red surface as an aluminium base plate of a projecter.

5mm thick, would that work as a heat sink for the hot side of my tec?

    Hi Andy,

    Short answer - yes.
Say the diode dissipates 0.5W and you want to cool the laser to 10C with a baseplate temperature of up to 30C. Convection and radiated losses (heating of the 10C laser due to ambient being 20C higher) may come to a watt depending on airflow past the laser.
To pump 1.5W across a 20C gradient will take an additional 3W or so meaning you have to dump just short of 5W into your baseplate. Depending on the size of your baseplate fan cooling on the other side may not be required.

straight over my head but yeah thanks robin.

the base plate will be something like 350mm by 250mm by 4mm thick

That should work great. Aluminium has a high thermal conductivity, so the heat will effectively be spread over the plate which will dissipate it. As long as you don't add a lot of thermal effect (several hundred watts) to it it should be ok.

I tried to model it, but can't really master the partial differential equation required to do so.

i want to try some 405nm diode testing.

i wana see how high to 200mw i can get it.

Yeah your baseplate should be fine, those TEC's are very small, and I doubt you will even have to worry about cooling the baseplate. Its when you start cooling whole modules that stuff gets abit harder ..

EDIT: If possible, you may wanna try scrap some paint off the baseplate where the TEC will go, I dont think paint is a good thermal conductor

EDIT EDIT: Just reread your post, that wasnt your baseplate LOL, sorry.

Hi Andy as said above, should work fine. Where did you get the TEC module? And do you already have (plans for) the TEC driver?

    cheers.

You are using the die4drive to run your TEC????
