In this case you don't have that luxury, Andy. A message is expected in this case. Leave him a voice mail message *every* time you call and he doesn't answer.
If you don't, the fact that you didn't leave a message could be held against you. The excuse goes something like this: "I didn't know the number, so I didn't answer. The guy never left a message... Obviously he heard my voicemail greeting, realised it was a wrong number, and just hung up, so I never gave it any thought."
Whether you prefer to talk to a live person or not is irrelevant. You *need* to leave a message in this case, if only to cover your own ass.
