Devo were in actual fact a highly innovative and talented group of individuals who made a name for themselves in the 1970's. I just had a look at your profile and you don't give an indication as to how old you are, so i'm guessing not quite old enough to remember the 70's

Do a Google search and see if you can find a track called 'Jocko Homo', that will enlighten you

I first heard about them when they became a local story about an Akron band gone pro. I was in the 8th grade, I think. I lived in Medina, Ohio then; about a half an hour drive to Akron.

I was immediately intrigued. Then, in Mr. Ship's Social Studies class, he talked about the band that he had just seen the night before on Saturday Night Live. Unfortunately, I missed it.

We had a young substitute teacher once that asked an extra credit question. "What is DEVO?" I knew!

I had a friend who lived right by me. He called me up one day to tell me about a stack of records he just got from his uncle who worked for WMMS, the famous Cleveland radio station.

He said there's this one record by a band called DEVO. "This is the dumbest thing I've ever heard!" He said. "Can I barrow it?" I asked. "You can HAVE it!" He said.

I walked over and got it right away.

It was DEVO's second album, Duty Now For The Future.

I got it home and dropped the needle. I think I listened to it straight through about three times in a row. I was totally blown away. I had never heard anything like this before. It changed everything about how I would think about music and art from then on.

I called up the Median record shop and ordered Q: Are We Not Men A: We are DEVO! right away. I then had to wait like the rest of the world for the other LPs that would follow.

By the time I got to college, Timing X, from album #2 was the opening music for the video taped Intro to Socialogy class.

BTW The name of the event that was a fund raiser for the Dems was Duty Now For The Future. I took the LP jacket and got three of the four original members' signatures! AND I finally got a chance to give them a few copies of my own CD, James Lehman 11:16:64!
