    Default Has anyone used AutoTrace?

I have been looking at AutoTrace a bit. It is an open source bitmap to vector program. It inputs and outputs a variety of different formats. ILDA is not one of them but it would be fairly easy to add. I should also be able to add a GUI to it so that you can see the input and output files as well as tweak the various settings.

But, before I go to that trouble I would like to see if anyone knows how good or bad it is at actually tracing? It has a GUI for it already but it is not for Windows so I can't try it out. If there are any Linux users out there who would be willing to give it a while and see if it is worth messing with that would be helpful.

Sounds interesting. Before you say you can't try it out because it runs on linux, have a look at this:

Linux installs great on it, straight from a CD image on your hard drive I'll try AutoTrace on my linux virtualbox later.

    Talking

WAAAAAAAAAAY back when... The guy who was developing AutoTrace was working on an ILDA output option and he used LaserBoy to test his work and show it to others as bitmaps output from LaserBoy!

Autotrace....man whata pain in the ass.
I hired an Italian guy to do my wires. Now they look like spaghetti!

Oh cool, so half of the work is already done. I'd just have to make sure it supports all of the current formats and then add the GUI.

I thought autotrace sounded familiar. I realize why now; I've used it!

My impression is that it's hardly user friendly. I wasted many hours on trying to convert a scanned drawing into a vector image. The result was poor and I ended up using illustrator instead, which I should have done in the first place. Here's the result: http://tocket.mine.nu/images/tlc3.png

Yes, it is very unfriendly. But, my question is that if it were made friendly with a GUI to adjust the settings and see the results while you adjusted them would it be good? Or would the quality be bad? I don't care about how hard it is to use now. I only care about how well it actually traces ones the parameters have been correctly specified.

If I remember correctly, it gives only good results for b/w images...

I seem to recall using a GUI for it...
