    Default spyware/malware/bot/garbage remover for XP

anybody know of a working spyware/malware/bot/garbage remover for XP
that is under 25-30$ and works, and DOES NOT create more infections of its own?

    My laptop is slowing down.

And is just me, or is IE7 the latest piece of microsnot crashware? I just downloaded firefox as a quick fix.

And please, no switch to linux comments, I need xp for some things.

I have used Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and Spybot S&D to good effect... Both free, neither are nasty.
Spybot immunizes IE as well which seems to work pretty well.

    Cool

I second the vote for Spybot S&D...

I like the fact that it alerts you when something is trying to change a registry setting. People pay attention to that. (Say what you want about Vista, the "Security Advisor" is a good thing for most of the otherwise mindless PC users.)

    Yep - Spybot!

They seem to be pretty good about regularly updating their definition files, too.

another very useful tool is SDfix
I have found many people in recent weeks being caught by a drive by infection 'antivirus 2008' now mophed into 'antivirus 2009'. Up to now SD fix is the only thing that ive found that will quickly and completely kill this - but it clears out lots of other shite as well

I clean up computers all the time for people.

I do a lot of things.

I clean out the temp files. There are a few places where Windows stashed junk.

I do a full fix chkdsk.

I run Abexo Free Registry Cleaner.

    I run SpyBot S & D.

I run msconfig and shut down all of the startup junk and uncheck most, if not all of the non MS services.

I also have an older version of Avast Antivirus, which I install, run the scan from a clean boot, and uninstall.

If the system is really screwed with one of the latest hard core Trojan horses, I run ComboFix.exe

Sometimes I do these things more than once and in different orders.

It's kinda- like peeling an onion!

Guess how much I pay for cleanup tools!

    James.
