That is not a surprise as putting a hub/switch in the mix negates the need for x over anyway. To connect 2 pcs together you would traditionally use an x over lead. If you have a hub - straight patch leads are ok.

    True -

But it's the successful direct connect between a several-year-old laptop and the .NET box that makes me think the ports are autosensing.

Of course, we could just ask Bill - but that would be WAY too easy!!

I don't remember which model board the .net uses, but here is the manufacturer of the ethernet interface: http://www.wiznet.co.kr/en/pro01.php?ss[2]=2

It seems that all the ethernet models are autosense though.

From the specs of the chipsets only the W5100 and the W5300 support auto MDI/MDI-X (auto cross-over) both of these have embedded layer1 (PHY) interface logic where the other two don’t and therefore can't manage the auto MDI/MDI-X.

So if the QM2000.net network adapter card has either of the W5x00 chips sets it will support the automatic cross-over function.

    Edit:
looking at the different modules the NM7010B+ module that uses the W3150A+ chipset supports Auto MDI/MDI-X as it contains an physical interface chip (IP101A-LF)

So it would appear that all the modules support Auto MDI/MDI-X therefore the QM2000.net should do auto cross-over

Thanks for all the great info guys!

I think I'll do some tests. The reason I purchased the .NET box in the first place is because I would much rather program shows on my desktop with 3 21" monitors versus my little 15 inch laptop with touchpad. I obviously want to use the laptop for portability reasons. My freakin desktop tower weighs over 50 LBS!

I did my first show on my desktop sending to my laptop wireless via a PCI card docking station. It was annoyingly slow loading and I had to finish the show on the laptop.

While I could run an ethernet cable to the .NET box, I'd also like to run wireless for connection reasons. I currently have a router capable of N connectivity. I'll look into buying a N capable access point and post my results when I get it.

    Jem,
Sorry for hijacking your thread. I never guessed it would go this far.

Actually, I forgot to mention something else about auto MDI/MDI-X, that is that Auto MDI/MDI-X will only work when the port is configured for auto Speed/Auto Duplex.

So if the configuration of the Laptop or AP is set for 100/full duplex the auto cross-over won’t work.

I’m not sure if it applies to all devices but I think it does and it certainly does to Cisco products (or Broadcom chipsets)
