I think Cruch mentioned that visitors can add but not delete now.
But the private userid/PW is still a good one.

Not to worry, Phillip... Cruch has made some changes so that people can't delete files now. Plus there is at least one member that has a complete backup of all the files on the FTP server as of a couple weeks ago! I think we'll be safe.

But I agree that if we have more problems with people posting bogus files or offensive directory names, then maybe a private login will be needed. Right now though, Cruch said he'd like to try it the "open" way once more.

liteglow: I guess you have missed the spam issue with the server..

The spamm on the server has stopped, thats a good thing.
    Still, it can happen again.

An idea, make private login/pass, and to gain access to the ftp server, members must have posted xx times in here?
    Any ideas for this? God/bad...

    Exclamation

As Cruch is keen to maintain an open door policy (and the IP banning seems to have cooled things down lately) we should see respect his wishes and see how it goes for a while (after all, any changes to the status quo would be more work for him and his trusted lieutenants)

With private userid/PW then if there's any skullduggery then it will be easy to identify the culprit and ban them.
This should include forum bans too.
Although this may seem a draconian measure, anyone who's gonna screw around with the FTP server is not a trusted community member and hence does not deserve to be part of our community with all the benefits that entails.

Defining a number of posts isn't a quality way of sorting out the wheat from the chaff but it's as good a measureable indicator as none.
Let's set it at (checks post count) ohhh I dunno ...600 !!

    Cool

If we *do* have to go to private ID's, we might be able to institute some sort of "referral" system. So, either you've been on the forum for X days, or you have X posts, or someone that meets the above criteria can vouch for you.

But yeah, the problem with maintaining a private login and password for everyone is that it's going to be a major pain for Cruch and Anthony (and whomever else is assisting with the FTP server). I can just imagine all the PM's about "I've forgotten my password" and such. Plus it really hurts the new people, who are probably the ones that have the most need to access the server in the first place.

I support the concept of a forum ban for anyone caught trying to sabotage the FTP server, however. (Assuming that both login info and IP addresses match, to preclude the possibility of a password being used by someone other than it's owner...)

Let's hope it doesn't come to that though...

anybody ever gonna talk about whom the abuser was, or appeared to be?

Or is it a highly classified secret?

    Steve,

I dont think it is a secret,
Cruch traced it to FL usa and has the IP numbers.
It looks like the abuser used a dynic ip or proxy.

Second steps to trace or compare to PL ip's arent taken (to my knowledge)

The server doesn't seem to have abuse problems anymore.
Maybe its a small provider problem at the moment.
