Qswitched green can become red with raman shifting in benzene or DMF

Lab Dye lasers with flow jets threshold at 3 watts of cw pump,

So yes, you can turn green to red or yellow

Just benzene or DMF alone does the trick? Where's the dye?

    Hey Cats -

LOL - ok, I confess... Didn't figure to even mention it here, but if you know somebody, who knows somebody... well, let 'em know... This little gem is REALLY REALLY cool, but with such 'overhead' to get it to do it's majik, well, right now, the space in the shop is more valuable...

So it'll be somebodys' lil' puppy... Hey Skipp (UV99) - you in'erested in another one, dude?? we're DRIVING a truck from NY to LA next week - if ya want, we can throw it on there for ya, and save on shipping cost / risk... we'll even work it out to come up to the Bay... Oh, Skiiiip - you on, buddy? just kiddin...

Anyhoo, very, very cool laser, and here's what we did with it... (concept-demo for a runway communication system for the FAA - ie, Green means GO, Red means STOP... - and yes, those are twin-KTP beams going down a runway! - but what better way than lasers to make visible lines to show runway start-stop points / length, taxiways / hold/stop points, etc - that can cut thru fog and rain and snow and blowing dust...beat THAT with LEDs!!

Really, the worse the weather is outside, the better lasers will 'work' - more particles = more illumination = greater visibility... (and, yes, to a point, but at the point you can't see a friggin' 40W beam going down a runway at ALL, you're prolly not gonna be flying anyway - time to pick another airport, Cap'n...) - but the FAA is a MONSTER of red-tape and memos of memos of memos and all kinds of such-like BS so, we'll see...

(and yes, we HAD bloody permission!!
    the FAA was THERE...

...now, what I really want is one of these puppies... can you imagine: 80W 'out of the fiber'???!!!... (and 110W+ under the hood!!!) sheesh...that little thing is just plain sick... gotta try and sell it to Rolling Rock!

    peace...

Hahaha - yeah, it was sort of a 'triumphal-moment' for Laserists everywhere - hard-won negotiations to get it done, but they were impressed with the demo - we'll see where it goes...they like the concept, but they don't like investing the millions it will take to get something like this on every major runway in America, when it #1, is no good during the day (though it is not intended to be, just for night / bad weather, when visibility is worse...) and #2, is potentially high-maintenance (vs other, more 'dumb' technologies (ie LEDs, etc) - they're not saying NO, but we'll see...

Laser safety was not as much of a concern, cause I told them, 'look, if the state-of-the-art TODAY is-such that a surgeon (with potential for the human-error-factor) can succesfully control 40+W inside someones gut (cause in there, a 'stray beam' would be catastrophic), believe me, we CAN engineer all the safety controls for every possible scenario there might be, relative to preventing beams from entering cockpits/airspace / hitting ground crews / trucks, etc, etc' - they bought it ...

We even made a couple giant 'beam traps' so they could see that 'yes, we CAN stop the beam' ...you know, you say the word 'laser' and they all just immediately think of this and you can't break them free of that with just words / explanations you have to bloody SHOW them...

    peace..

Great job Jon and a possible milestone in stigma removal.

If you need to ask the question 'whats so good about a laser' - you won't understand the answer.

Thanx! - Yeah, watching the beam change from near-yellow to orange to salmon to ferrari, then blood red, before-your-eyes, as you dial the little thumb-wheel on the bi-refringent filter is mind-blowing - the colors are just simply, well - delicious...

It's just too bad that with this method of producing red, you need so much 'overhead' (having to pump with a giant KTP) - if I had a boat-load of extra cash, I'd wanna explore rigging-up 2 10W DPSS 532 units, to pump-this with - THEN that would be an incredible 'bit of kit' - all 110V, internally aircooled, and you could split-off ~4-5W of the 532 for green and expect 6+W of 629-640 - WOW!!! And if you could afford to add 4-5W of DPSS blue... - but even with the 532 and 630 - imagine the yellows and oranges you could make... mmmm..

...Now, where did I place that spare $75K??

I'll be answering your PM shortly, btw..
    cheers..

PS - found this little gem while searchin for that Bond clip yesterday - hilarious! njoy..
