    The Machida grating creates a 180 degree fan of beams as opposed to the narrower angle achieved by scanners... And it's a proper old skool effect

    machida has the advantage that the beams are far denser per degree then you can get with scanners and the power is even between orders, hard to achive with a standard grating, making them great for aud scanning effects.
