    its spelled selem .. lets look at this

    /se/ /lem/ thats how the syllables break out

    se = seh
    lem = lem
    sehlem

    seh to suh is normal in speech

    so seh lem or suh lem are acceptable.

    there is NO rule that we can rationally use to explain why the second 'e' should be long.

    Based on the above statements its seh-lem (with suh-lem being an acceptable alternate)

    How about asking the guy that came up with the acronym in the first place?

    Oh wait, that would be me...

    For the record, I have always pronouced it Sel-eem, with a long 'e' in the second syllable. Yes, I know that it's grammatically incorrect. It just sounds better to me that way.

    Would you be happy if I changed it to "South Eastern Laser Enthusiast's Exposition Meeting"?

    Adam

    PS: It's really not a big deal. People will pronounce it however they want.

    Exposition Meeting is redundant..

    besides just because you created an acronym does not mean you can impose a pronunciation of that acronym.. ESPECIALLY if that acronym is a non standard word.

    as a matter of fact its a hebrew word and its pronounced seh-lem by jewish Americans.

    even better it means image

    Which is why I didn't use that in the initial acronym. I was being facetious when I suggested it again.

    Oh really? Who else but the creator of a new, non-standard word would be the one to impose pronounciation then?

    I'm sure it has other meanings in other languages as well. However, as I am not a Jewish American, nor one who speaks Hebrew, the pronounciation in that language is basically irrelevant. (Now, if it were a Yiddish word, you might be onto something!)

    Indeed, I did not. However, I will concede that it *is* an appropriate reference.

    But I'm still calling it Sel-EEM!

    Talking

    I like to call it

    SEA LEM

    I get the SEA (long E) from "East" and the LEM (short e) from enthusiast.

    I like the accent on the LEM because that is what it is, not where it is!

    Plus there are other LEMs out there.

    And I think we've already determined that I'm always right!
