Or you just could spring for the $100 and be done with it.

Nope. can't argue. Can't defend a word I posted here, it's not a good day for me coming up with anything good so for once I deleted all in this thread rather than let it waste other people's time and make me look like a fool.

I have one model older than that that I bought several years ago and has been fine. I paid a little over $220 for it.

I know you love to argue everything but I can state emphatically that it WILL solder surface mount components just fine. You don't use the iron you use the hot air with solder paste. Works great, was cheap.

    Here is mine.

Well I hate that you deleted posts there the_doctor, always interesting reading and usually very informative. Oh well, gotta do what you gotta do.

Thanks for the link chad, I think I'm going to order one of those!

Well, they were crap. The first scheme was never finished, the second never started. So two big indefensible posts that had no reason to stay. If I post anything good at all, it makes no sense to dilute it with crap. I might get some Weller spares off eBay if they're cheap and there when I think of it, but unless I do, and something comes of it, I won't post on that subject again. I doubt I'll do it anyway, I figured out successful ways of direct contact soldering and desoldering, and I don't need to remove large IC's. Well, last time I removed a square flatpack IC I just shaped a square ring of 2.5mm˛ copper wire round it, dosed it liberally with solder, then grabbed the lot off the board by sliding a feeler gauge under it. Sounds crude but heat spill is a lot less than with hot air anyway.

So although yesterday I got into a mad rush of trying to present ideas about hot air, that's all it was, literally. I never needed to use it so there's nothing I can say about it worth defending.

EDIT: Singularly appropriate thread title for me, as it happens..

I had ordered some parts for the hot air method of soldering, however, last night, I just couldn't stop myself from trying a couple of these SMT devices with my iron and solder. I must say, it was loads easier than I thought it would be. Sadly, the parts I order for the hot air method may end up sitting on the shelf permenantly. The only thing I think I need now is smaller gauge solder, currently using .031, last night I ordered some .015.
