Or introduce individual login/PW's so that those who are "shocked and dismayed" with the free service don't have to suffer the pain of using it.

I realise that Cruch has said before that he'd prefer not to go down that route but if morons are gonna start yelling about what is essentially a private server run for the benefit of the users on here then those users should show some respect and decorum.

If it was to be a paid/sponsored service/server with the resultant security measures in place then I'd be happy to subscribe.

totally agree anthony but its not just tony and me getting frustrated in general (not just with the server with everthing). it seems everyone is.
i agree tony shouldnt have said it in the way he did but i dont think buffo should have either. these things can get sorted without kicking off with each other and saying what they both did is making the situation worse.

this all needs to get sorted or the whole community is going to be fighting and no one will be posting messages never mind files

Tony's comments about the FTP server were totally out of line. Several people agree that such comments will only lead to the FTP server being taken down out of frustration. Also, I disagree with your comment that we are all in this for the love of lasers. *Most* of us are, but not all. Tony's comment does not suggest that he is in it for anything other than the love of copyrighted material. His post was a slam at everyone here - all because he was upset that he didn't get a copy of the "good files" (that turned out to be copyrighted) before they were taken down.

The issue of copyrighted material being uploaded to the server is a separate issue, and I agree that there is plenty to discuss there. However, Tony's stance was that there was already some material on the server, so there should be nothing wrong with having more material available. This is lunacy, and is absolutely not the image we want to be associated with.

Tony claims that "everything on the FTP server is breaking copyright laws". Well, I know that I've uploaded 6 shows that didn't violate copyright. Those shows either contain licensed Pangolin artwork (which I am allowed to use in my shows - even if I give them to others) or original abstracts and beam frames I've created myself. Likewise, I'm sure many members have uploaded similar content.

Unlike Tony, I *am* in this because I love lasers. But do you really think that the guy that calls us all "backyard lawyers", and tells we are all "full of sh*t" is really in this for the love of lasers? Sorry, but if that's the sort of love he's pushing, I'm not buying it.

If Tony had instead posted a compelling argument about why he felt the policies should be changed, then we may have had a constructive debate about the issue. But when he blasted away at everyone on the forum (not to mention pissing all over Cruch and all the work he does maintaining the server), I think something needed to be said about it. Crucify me if you want, but I'm tired of a couple jerks acting out and everyone else just sitting back and taking it. Silence = consent, and that's got to change.

I'm actually understand what Tony is on about but I don't agree with many things.
First.All servers are run by Dictators. Face it. The person who runs it makes rules and thats normal. He can do whatever the hell he wants.
Second there were a lot of copyrighted stuff. There was a "Creation" by Pangolin in ILDA. I know it's a very old show but still. Many many frames are cuts of other copyrighted shows.
3rd. The person who is running the FTP can be in trouble for distribution of copyrighted materials.

Even in our liberal Canada there is a law in which you CAN download copyrighted materials but you CAN NOT distrebute it. So even in Canada Pangolin can go on to FTP owners.

Last: The action of deletion is done to cover FTP ower's ass! that all.

as iv said it would just be better to be told why and who deleted it so we know. its just common courtousy. i totally understand both sides of this argument. this whole thing has got way out of hand i feel and im sorry for even bringing it up.

i feel this has been made worse by people talking to each other without respect. iv done it in this thread and others have but i feel it would be better to take what people say with a pinch of salt and not read too deep into it.

forums are ways of everyone to learn from others and the reason i came here is that alot of forums on the net end up with loads of arguments and trash talking. please dont let that happen to pl.
its a great community of people who do love lasers and im sure tony does too. at the start of this thread i got annoyed. people do sometimes so can we all just start trying to get along a bit better and enjoy the great community that is photonlexicon

Thanx for your comments guys, I never said I didnt like lasers. I simply said that "I hate Backyard Lawyers" and I realy dont think anyone in the world is going to chase me down and spend thousands of dollars because I have downloaded a picture or copyright frame. Sure its up to the Admin to make the rules expecially if hes responsible for the material on it But 1 thing all these companys who produce Frames,Software,Hardware must know that this thing happends all around the world and know just to brush it off because they have better things to worry about than chasing 1 guy half way around the world trying to take him to court for copyright breach.
Thats just STUPID sharing files and frames should be alowed as It makes the laser industy much more profesional looking and may promote new members in it. It also can help produce some amazing laser shows and thats the reason we all meet in this forum to produce fantastic shows.
