FLEM venue search continues

The boat club board met yesterday, and they have no problems with us using the building. (Hooray!) Also, the rental fee is less that I originally expected: Just $50 for the whole day (and night, if we so desire). They also don't mind if we want to do this on a semi-regular basis, so this could be a recurring gig for us. (Truth be told, they *love* the idea of being able to rent the building out for $50 per day!)

The only sticking point right now is the date. Turns out I was incorrect about the painting work they wanted to do being a potential conflict. That was for another area that is not at all related to this building. So we're good there.

However, there is still a potential conflict. (Of course! Nothing is ever easy!) Turns out the boat club promised the building to *another* boat club for one Saturday in March. Trouble is, no one at the meeting could remember *which* Saturday in March, and the person that maintains the event calender was not present at the meeting last night! (groan!)

I've got my Mom burning up the phone lines right now, calling around to try and find out *which* Saturday in March was promised to the other club.

Bottom line: If the 21st is still open, then we've got it and we're all set. But if the other boat club is going to be there on the 21st, then we're screwed. We'd have to move it back to the 28th, and that would suck for dsli-Jon.

I should have an aswer by 6 PM tonight at the latest, and I will post here on PL as soon as I've got it. (DocJohn, I know you need to book a flight... I'm trying to get an answer as fast as I can.) Everyone involved knows that people from out of state will be attending, and that they need to make travel arrangements in advance, so hopefully they'll respond with appropriate speed...

Also, it *is* possible that both the 21st and the 28th could be open. If that's the case, we *could* hold back-to-back meets if there is enough interest. It's something to keep in the back of our minds anyway, and we can discuss it on the 21st, assuming all goes as planned.

Man... I need a vacation... (Make that a lasercation!)

OK - It's official! We've got the venue for Saturday, March 21st. (We can also have it on the 28th if we want!) So mark your calenders, folks! FLEM is set for Saturday, March 21st, in Tavares, FL. The venue is located just off Hwy 441 in Tavares, on the east bank of the Dead River, just north of the highway. (Here's a link to a couple pictures of the venue.) We'll have the whole building free for our exclusive use.

We'll have plenty of tables and chairs at the venue. The building also has a full kitchen that we can use, and of course there are men's and women's restrooms.

There are some windows in the building that will need to be covered. I'm going to send Aaron on a clandestine mission to figure out exactly how many. (I think I've got enough material to cover them, but I want to be sure.)

My plan is to arrive at around 9 AM and start setting things up. We can stay as late as we want, though in practice it usually breaks up around midnight or so. I think Aaron is planing a folow-on event (backyard BBQ of some kind) for the next day too. Probably will need to start an official "FLEM" thread here pretty soon...

HAHA! Yeah, you read my mind Aaron! I was going to send my Mom to do some area recon, but since she doesn't have a computer or a camera phone, there's no easy way for her to send pictures to me.

So yeah, if you wouldn't mind taking a ride over there on your bike one day (only about 8 miles from your house, I think) and snap some pictures of the place, I'd really appreciate it.

I'm concerned about how many windows we'll need to cover, and how large they are. From the pictures you can see on Google Street View, it looks like the short side of the building that faces the river is all glassed in. I'm hoping that what I see is actually a sun-room that was added on, with a separate set of doors behind the room that we can block off with sheets or something. The windows that face the road won't be a problem, but I don't know about the far side of the building (the one that faces the lake).

Also, see if you can look inside and get a feel for the layout. From what I understand, there are 3 support pillars in the place: one in the middle, and one on each of the far ends. That shouldn't be an issue, since even the venue in Orlando had that huge support pillar in the center of the room and we could still work around it, but I want to be prepared.

Anyway, take a look and see what you think. (Hey - it gives you a reason to take the Harley for a ride! Not that you need a reason, but hey...)

I was going to start another thread for that. (List of attendees.) But yeah, if you want to invite someone, get the word out now, because the date is carved in stone.

Also, we can kick around the idea of doing back-to-back FLEMs if we want, as the venue is also available the following weekend (March 28th). So if we really want to get hard-core about this...
