Why not C? gcc is well supported on the AVR.

Yes it does. The Arduino stuff also uses gcc, and is so easy to use it's almost ridiculous.

yep gcc is the way to go

Install the avrstudio IDE software from the avr website
Install avrgcc from the winavr website.
Tell avrstudio you want it to use avrgcc and your ready to go.

Just make sure you get an attiny/atmega with enough flash and sram for what your doing.

Do you like BASCOM AVR? I have not had much experience with it. I have used AVR's quite extensively. I use WinAVR in combination with AVRStudio 4 to do C and assembler programming. Any projects in mind?

Ask me in a week or so when I get done with a device to measure two pulses 1-150 milliseconds apart and dump it to a lcd in human readable.
Otherwise the project would be done in 8051 assembler with paulmon for the display functions.

    Default Hmm...

That sounds a bit of the long way to go around. I am sure the Bascom makes things a bit easier and probably prototyping is quick. Do you program in C at all?

I just bought the C book.

It has other functions that need a high level language besides the pulse measurment.
