Default QM2000.Net Network Problems - Help Please

    Hi all

Up to this point I have always used my QM2000.Net on a single computer, usually a laptop.

I now have a need to use the QM2000.Net in my home on a desktop PC. If I connect the QM2000.Net directly to the PC it doesn't work until I go into the LAN Network connection properties and set the TCP/IP settings to use the I.P. address 192.168.1.1, once I have done that the QM2000.Net works fine.

However, once I have done that I have used my LAN port for direct connection to the QM2000.Net and am therefore unable to use the internet at the same time. If I want to use the internet I have to reconfigure the TCP/IP settings to obtain an IP address automatically , unplug the QM2000.Net and plug the network cable back into my modem/router and I can once again access the internet.

What I would like to do is leave my PC plugged into the router and use a spare network connection on the back of the router to plug my QM2000.Net into whenever I need access to it in my home. I have of course tried this but the PC is unable to see the QM2000.Net when it is plugged into the router.

The router has an IP address of 192.168.2.1 and the QM2000.Net has an IP address of 192.168.1.161

Any suggestions as to where I should start to look to try and sort out the problem? I have tried pinging the QM2000.Net from the PC (when it is plugged into the router) but there is no reply. Incidentally I have disabled Windows firewall on the PC.

When replying please bear in mind that I am a complete numpty when it comes to networking, so please try to keep answers as simple as possible .

    Thanks

    Jem

When using the laptop with the QM2000.NET is it connected to the internet in anyway ? If not are you just setting the IP address on the Laptop so it is within the same address range as the QM2000.NET i.e. your laptops IP address is 192.168.1.1

Well one way would be to go into the router from your browser, should be with http://192.168.2.1/ and somewhere there should be an option to chang it's IP address, change that to 192.168.1.1 save the config and it will most probably have to do a re-boot. You most probably will have to go to a cmd window and type IPCONFIG /ALL which will release all current network adaptors and they will then try and establish a new connection on your new IP address range of the router.

The mot preferably option (to me) would be to change the IP address on the QM200.NET interface to 192.168.2.xxx where xxx is a number from 1 to 255 but most probably be set to something like 161. Sorry can't help you do that as I do not have a QM2000.NET interface so not sure how to access/change settings on it.

Have both the desktop and laptop "Obtain an IP address automatically", you know where this is done as you have set an IP address there before.

There is another post about this I will find it and post the link.

    Hope that helps,

If you have version 3.5 or later, have a look in the 'Network' directory of LD2000...

There is a tool in there called 'QM2000NET_Config.exe'

I have not used it before, but I believe that will allow you to change the IP Address of the QM2000.Net...

Stick it in the same subnet as your router, so 192.168.xxx.xxx (As long as the first 3 blocks of numbers are the same) also make sure both your router and QM2000 have the same subnet mask.. Usually 255.255.255.0....

    Cheers

    Thanks Guys.

There's another way to fix this without changing the IP address of the QMnet box, or loosing connectivity with a larger network that has too many devices to feasably change them all to the 192.168.yy.xx group.
XP allows you to have multiple IP addresses for the same computer, so you can keep the 192.168.yy.xx group and also be able to connect to devices in the 192.168.zz.xx group.

    Open network connections
Right click the network card - properties
Scroll down list box and highlight "internet protocol TCP/IP", click properties
    Click the advanced button
Click the add button under "ip addresses"
Type in the additional new IP address you'd like.
Click OK out of the trail of windows opened.

Though I've just noticed that this only works if you have a fixed IP address, not if you use DHCP. So i'm not sure if it helps you, but it might be handy to know. Saved me on more that one occasion.
