    Laser Warning Thermopile's Discussion

Who wants to start on "How To Use A Thermopile"

This would be of the laser power head type.
    Just the basics

I have used them for over 20 years

if you want to rule the world??? build a thermopile detector (head) that is callibrated that plugs into any digital DVM people already own. Something like 1mv=1mw, I dont know...i just always wanted something like that.

    Being a bit sarcastic here.

You get a sensitive six digit voltmeter, plug in 1 mV per watt TP head. Watch drift and noise on meter. Then buy a lasersbee or a coherent 212 that has the signal processing, damping and temperature compensation.
212 schematic is in the FTP, courtesy of me.

    Ok,
now let's talk about settling and heat variations that can effect measurements

I thought the thermopile (electronics) constantly compensated for delta t. (that is the whole theory behind it...right???) Frankly the laserbee is about the best solution out there for the buck anyway. Jerry hit that one out of the park...price wise / performance meaning.

yes it does, but grab a sensor head and see how long it takes to settle

Don't forget a nice drafty room is not the best thing either! It is pretty easy to throw off a reading even using coherent power max heads, the warmth of your hand will do it... It will settle in a bit but you really want it to stabilize before you zero the meter or all the reading are CRAP!

Laser (the acronym derived from Light Amplification by Stimulated Emissions of Radiation) is a spectacular manifestation of this process. It is a source which emits a kind of light of unrivaled purity and intensity not found in any of the previously known sources of radiation. - Lasers & Non-Linear Optics, B.B. Laud.
