    Default Greatest mom ever !

    Mothers day is coming up and my mother deserves something extra special this year

    Allow me to explain:

    This morning, I got a call from my mom telling me she got something the 'kringloopwinkel'. (kringloopwinkel is the kind of shop where you can buy second hand stuff for cheap)

    She bought 4 devices for 10€, of which she thought 3 of them were oscilloscopes.
    I asked her to take pictures of them and mail them to me, since I will not be home until friday.

    There were indeed 3 oscilloscopes and one diode curve tracer.

    The first osc I looked at is a somewhat old, but nice condition dual channal 10Mhz one
    The second one is a twin-beam philips 10Mhz one (nice!)

    But when I looked at the third one, I couldn't help but smile.

    It's a HP 184A oscilloscope, with a 1804A FOUR CHANNEL vertical amplifier and a 1821A time base and delay generator.

    It has a kind of analog sample-and-hold function, so you can view single shot signals, the time base generator can intensify certain portions of the image, you can even zoom certain parts of the signal!

    And the best part is that I can now view 4 channels at once with a 50Mhz bandwidth !!!

    And all of that for 10€

    The only thing I'm not sure about are the buttons on the left side. One of them says store. Does this mean this thing is digital (not likely, because it was first made in the 70's I think)
    Someone got a manual?

    haha wow, a nice find there!

    the only things in the kringloopwinkeln near to me are old clothes and dishes

    Hi FourDee,

    Did you know, the storage oscilloscope is not necessarily digital? In this case, the trace is stored in the phosphor of the screen. The first trace is drawn with a high acceleration voltage, then a low acceleration voltage is used to fire a continuous stream of electrons towards the screen. The low energy electrons are drawn towards the charged trace, which keeps it illuminated without any memory.

    When the swine flu wipes out the rest of the world and Europe is under nuclear attack, your storage oscilloscope is the only one to survive, because it has no microprocessor dependence. Also, no matter what goes wrong with it, you can repair it forever with discrete parts from your junk bin.

    I thought it would be something like that. (I mentioned the 'kind of analog sample-and-hold')

    Anyway I really like it, and if aynone can direct me towards the manual I would be very grateful.
    (I saw a manual on ebay for 25 dollars, but cheaper would be gr8)

    Neat Stuff! That's also how the first computer RAM worked. They had a grid of photosensors on the screen to extract the little dots of data.
