Default Standard multimode and single mode fibres

Is it possible to use standard single mode or multimode fibres used for network switch backbones to transmit laserbeams over a short distance?

Yes, but depending on the wavelength the fiber was designed for you will suffer losses if you use a different wavelength of laser from that which the fiber was designed. Most of the fibers you are talking about are designed for use in the IR region. I have used this fiber with partial success in holography.

One thing that you should know is that the beam will not be collimated when it exits the fiber, it will also be very nicely spatially filtered which is a good thing for holography. At best I managed about 75% to 80% transmittance with very careful setting up.

I have just recently got hold of a visible wavelength fiber and launcher so i'm hoping for better success

    Cheers
