pool, poole, poll, pole, pol... Eh - what's the difference? Is there money to be won or lost? Then count me in!

Yeah, Clandestiny's CVL's are hulking monsters, that's for sure. Completely impractical for most shows. (And the warm-up time is a big factor.) But maybe we could do a controlled test at a LEM. No way we could scan it though. We'd have to keep it terminated at all times, and even then, the spot would be so bright that you'd need goggles just protect yourself from the specular reflection. (Now that is frightening!)

But then again, with a divergence of much less than 1 mrad, we could send that beam a *long* way... Maybe we could set a record for burning a 2x4 from the furthest distance away? Pat, I think that's a contest were the CVL would total beat that Cobra YAG of yours!

Adam, so if I show up at SELEM with 3.5 watts of qswitched green, am I gonna need scan fail to use it?

If thats the case, the 2.4 whitelight with low diverge optics may need to stay home too....

Do they allow propane forklifts in the facility or will you have to use electric?

WHAT??? no current control on that bad boy. No goggles necessary, usually the suit of armor is enough protection.

If someone can give me the exact dates, I can go to big 5 sports and buy some ping pong paddles and try to rig them up to some scanners.

    Im always thinkin!

Poll, pool, puddle...you all loose...because I lost it in 1983 or was it 89... oh well you get the picture.

That sounds like a plan! While your at it, pick up some bathroom mirrors at home depot as bounce mirrors! With a beam that big, the power density would be really low!

Not at .6 mrad divergence and peak pulse greater than 350kw depending on the unit

3.5 watts is probably OK. If the scanners fail, you've got several seconds to kill the beam before it burns anything important. (Assuming that you don't aim it at the curtains, the carpet, or the upholstery on the seats.) It's just that Clandestiny's CVL's are capable of 30 times as much power, and at that level you can't scan it on anything other than cinderblocks...
If thats the case, the 2.4 whitelight with low diverge optics may need to stay home too...
It should be fine. Remember - we've had two 3.5 watt lasers operating in the auditorium before. Jeff's modified HGM5, and George's 3 watt YAG. (We also had a couple other high power YAGs last year - one from Johnathan and one from Marc, but I don't think either one was making quite as much as 3 watts...)

My comfort level peaks at around the 4-5 watt level. Beyond that, I'd be seriously concerned about doing damage to some of the fixtures in the auditorium.

Um... Not sure you realize that the CVL's that Clandestiny has in his collection are among the most collimated beams you'll ever come across. Sure, they're 1 inch in diameter at the aperture, but they also sport .6 mrad divergence. So that 1 inch beam is still going to be very tight even after traveling several miles.

What sort of divergence do you get out of that Cobra YAG of yours?

OK - you've got us there. Schlepping the head and PSU into the venue would be incredibly difficult. That's why the only way it would work is if he brought one of his smaller CVLs (one of the 35 watt units).
WHAT??? no current control on that bad boy. No goggles necessary, usually the suit of armor is enough protection.
Until you look at the glowing spot it creates on the cinderblock wall, that is. Then you're going to want some goggles!

Awwww... Now you're just being mean! But yeah, the beam *is* huge on those things. I actually have a pair of GS 330 scanners that have giant rectangular mirror on them though, and I think they'd work with the beam from a CVL. Open loop only, of course, and probably not any beter than 8K speeds, but it's better than nothing, right?

HA! Not a bad idea Ben... But the power density of a CVL is actually pretty high. You'd need to expand the beam an awful lot to make it safe. But how cool would it be to have a 1 foot diameter beam bouncing around? Hmmmm....
