    Default Polarization

if the polarization of a laser is unknown, is there an easy way to figure it out??

lets just say if a PBS is NOT accesible.

um polarized glasses should work i think.
    or
defocus it and look for the lines in the image on the wall.

Utter nonsense. The diode stripes do not always follow the Polarization.

Fire it into another PBS and see where the beam goes.

Alternatively, use a piece of polaroid and see if you can block it.

just pick an old solar calculator, and remove the polarization foil from the screen... you now have something that helps, but you still have to sort out what the orientation is

Pop the lid and see the diode position. Getting a huge spot will not tell anything of the polorized state of a DPSS laser... maybe hints of mode at the time..... Most likely it will be horizontal....unless it is a Lasercentury....45 deg from standard....most likely. Some have T-03 cans... I would get a cube or a waveplate. A very few CNI lasers I have service had verticle polorization.....probably for a matched pair to mix with a cube.

See attached BMP Or if you have a polarized hene see other attachment.
Usually polarized henes have a P in the part number.

There are Malus Law and Brewster Angle Java Physics Demos on Line if you are in doubt of what I have attached. Sunlight near the horizon is polarized, you can google the details.
