Default Pangolins New Beam Brush Hardware ! & audiance scan !

I have not seen it mentioned in other threads so i will add here and see if my undestanding is correct and to clarify for anybody passing thru ...beam brush is a new piece of hardware which pangolin will be selling likely before the end of the year for likely under $1000 , likely around $750 ..then using a software facilty that has been built into pangolin software for around a decade you will be able to adjust the size of beam in any part of your projection zone

This can add HUGE amount of creativity to shows , its difficult to explain quite how radical a change this is ..we were shown some videos from testing it can almost create 3D effects as well as change existing shows quite radically by making certain beams bigger an thicker than others

As i understand it ..and i stand here to be corrected this peice of hardware in conjunction with pangolins exisitng software could be one of the most radical changes to the way we all scan in the future .... imagine not having to worry about audiance scanning ! you simply set a zone where the audiance is and increase the beam size ! ..increasing beam size reduceses amount of laser peower entering your eyes therefore makes it safer etc ......... now the reason why i am hesitant about this is i am sure its not that simple ..or is it ..i also dont think it was directly mentioned at the presentation but everything i know about laser safety and increasing safety the easiest way to resolve is to increase divergence ......... it seems the product is still in development stage i beleive rather than production phase so maybe pangolin are waiting to run some major testing before trumpeting this amazing safety feature ..but time will tell !

    Any pics?
Does the system change the beam size automatically or do you have to set it?

If it follows Bill's patent, its a holographic optic on a Cambridge.

If it follows the other patent, made by Neos/Pangolin its 4 paths, 5 lenses, 5 mirrors, a waveplate, a PBS and a cambridge, and I've seen it work.

A single CT6800HP and driver will set you back $700 so... the former sounds about right.

Suprising, I would expect a servo voice coil mounted with a lens, similar to a CD/DVD pickup device. Add a few fixed lenses on each side and voila instant beam brush that can be mass produced.

Also, I had been asking about this back in August 2008 but no one gave it a second thought then, even Bill posted immediately afterward without a comment.

That said, it IS good that this concept is becoming more of a reality.

    Hi ya Paul

Hope you got back ok buddy

its a shame you could not make the Pango user meeting as it was discussed in some depth

im hoping bill will be able to come here and post the details in full

the device ( unlike previous devices that were not practical because of speed and cost ) works using the voice coil principle , a smal tube 20mm in diameter with 2 lenses ...

we were told that it runs at near scanner speeds ( equivilent of 24K pps ) the coil has a moving force of aprox 26 newtons and the moving optical assembly has a weight of 4 grams

therre is currently 1 prototype built and tested ... they currently have components to complete 10,

LOBO have ordered the second unit ....

I have requested the 3rd one ( but we will see )

the price is expected to be about $750... complete with device ... amp... and cables ...

and it brings another dimension to the laser beam ... i guess you could say it gives beamshows the z axis ...

it gives depth to layered fans of beams ... it can create water style ripple effects, grafixs can have texture and i guess people will discover lots of new things that can be done

hopefully Bill or someone can come here explain a bit further

    all the best ... Karl

I was thinking it might be based on electro-wetted lens technology .Given that it's being developed for the mobile phone camera market - it would end up being rather cheap - not sure how fast it would be. Barney

Sounds good but it isn't a cheap solution. For those doing professional shows it will be a great asset though by the sounds of things.

I do know there are software developments on the safety front that may provide a cheap or free integrated software solution to basic safety, however, I'm not in a position to say anything further on this.

Very cheap and very fast but won't work at high powers.

Basically, everything Banthai wrote is true.

The real problem is one of engineering. For a beam brush device to be useful, it needs to move a lens far enough and fast enough to be useful. This means, lets say at least 3mm (with 5mm to 10mm being preferable) and preferably at "scanning speads", which means 2.5kHz small signal bandwidth and 300 microsecond step response. So far, devices made specifically for laser are at least 10 times slower, and many are 100 times slower and only move a lens a maximum of 2mm.

We invented the concept of Beam Brush in 1992, and this is our own fourth try at such a device... For the current prototype, the engineering is not only done by us, but a world-renowned moving coil expert consultant. But the results we have now are quite good, and we will be posting pictures and video soon.

Your post said someting about RGB convergence, not specifically spot size. I guess the terminology was missed...
