Cool New Mexico/ South West Laserists?

I just moved down to Silver City, NM anybody else around here? I know there are a few people in Arizona and Texas, so I thought it was worth a try to ask!

Laser (the acronym derived from Light Amplification by Stimulated Emissions of Radiation) is a spectacular manifestation of this process. It is a source which emits a kind of light of unrivaled purity and intensity not found in any of the previously known sources of radiation. - Lasers & Non-Linear Optics, B.B. Laud.

    Thumbs up

    Pat,

I am pretty sure I will find some laser geeks, but they probably can't post online (I am only a couple of hours away from white sands). I thought I would throw out something, I know there are a few laserists that don't post in Arizona and some Texan's (but Texas is a BIG place). I still hope that I can make PaCoLEM II next year! I do have some fun ideas about pumping a YAG rod after reading about other 'Solar' pumped lasers but I still need to find a good dish. Worst comes to worst I will order some molds from Bullseye and slump a few, it would be good practice for Telescope Lens making (crap more expensive hobbies).

My buddy Karl is 314 miles from you in Phoenix, as is one commercial laser company. There was a laser rentals company in Tucson.

What are you doing in Silver middle of nowhere City"?

    Steve,

    What or Why?

I moved down here because my Wife is teaching down here, hopefully I will have a job sometime soon (the university is sloooow). As for what I am doing not much so far other than building antennas, brushing up on geology, looking for a job, drinking beer, etc... I now have a shack to setup a workshop but of course it is lacking electricity. I will see what I can do, glass and lasers both require electricity!

I will be heading into Tuscon next week for a day too late to schedule a visit to the Fred Whipple observatory, but maybe go check out the Titan II or the Copper Mine again in Green Valley.

If I can't find a job very close, Lockheed Martin is hiring in Las Cruces and they are a wonderful employer.

Lightbulb Not to threadjack my own thread, but...

    Hola,

I was wondering if you have any experience in dealing with high altitude cooling? (I should have taken Laserman532's offer on a water cooling block!) I did find this as reference http://www.comairrotron.com/high_altitude_cooling.shtml my damn air is too thin @ 5800 feet moving to 7000 feet next month great for CQ (yes I still need to take my darn ARRL test), but my laptop has been overheating due to the lack of air density... Is it time for more water cooling? I have been planning on utilizing my beautiful heat-sync from Pat (aiziz mount not the YAG cooler) do I need to add a few TEC's??

I have not yet tested my lasers since I have gotten here, but if anybody needs altitude tests I will be at a nice altitude very soon , more available on request.

Where it really gets fun is tubes with brewster windows, the slight change in refractive index is enough for a misalign, unless you have a lexel with the altitude compensated windows (lexel sold a lot of airborn tubes) 95% of lexels are altitude compensated.

How you compensate the windows, if a PL user can guess, will result in dinner for 2 at Parasons, FOB Akron, Ohio, ie you pay the airfare to here, at a date and time of my choosing.

My HeCd laser lost half it's power at PaCoLEM... and I think Bend was only around 4,000ft

As soon as I got her back down to sea level she was happy again
