    Default The Padded Dungeon

Well, thats what my latest project is affectionally being called.

In reality, it is a 2.5m anechoic chamber for testing marine radar transmitters.

It took my almost 3 weeks to build this. It is possibly the biggest thing I have built for some time. It is capable of taking a 2m open array.

    There is £35K sat here.

Even the screwdrivers cost £45 each. They are made from 6AI-4V titanium though.
You have to use non ferous tools when working with radar to prevent degaussing the magnatron, which would trash the unit being tested.

I am familiar with the acoustic version of these but not the RF ones. Can I assume that the (foam?) is coated with ram/ RF reflective something?

    Cool none the less!

The foam is impregnated with powdered carbon. Thus making it somewhat messsy to work with. Usually by the end of each day, I looked like I had been down a coal mine.

So... how many watts does that baby put out? TTL or analogue?

Funky looking stuff, do they have some sort of RF shielding around the cabinet while you are measuring output? I have heard radars can be sometimes not the best for your health in long/large doses. Kinda like my old job, where I worked next to 36 servers and many other computers all day long :/
