Question outdoor system, dpss vs gas, best bang 4 buck?

ok so Im about to price out a 5-6 watt laser projector build and want the best bang for the buck. So while I have around 38k to play with I think I can build 1 dpss or maybe 2 gas white light projectors....

    any thoughts

I'd really like to build two...

If its going outdoors, I would consider using a CuBr system. The fat beams will look much more impressive. The 8 W Spectronika costs under $10K, so 2 of these would be well within your budget.

I think he might be wanting whitelight and not just green/yellow.

I would get the FAA site approval before I bought anything.

Yeah I reckon gas would be the way to go. However if your temperatures drop below zero frequently and they are water cooled, you may need some way to insulate the pipes so they dont freeze up. Are they going to be permanently installed?

    Cool

    Need more info first...

Will you be doing just beams, or do you need graphics capability? Do you need full color or just green? How many hours per day will it need to run? How many days each week? What is the consequence if something fails and the show can't go on? And the big one that Steve already mentioned, do you have FAA approval?

If you're only going to to monochrome beam work then you're all set. For your budget you could buy four 5-watt projectors off-the-shelf and still have money left over.

Full color presents it's own problems, but if we're still talking just beam work (meaning that you don't care much about beam specs), then there are numerous solid state projectors that will work, or you could build your own. (You can get away with using a high-power 635 nm red, because the fat beam won't be an issue.)

On the other hand, if you need full-color, white-balanced *graphics* in the 5 to 6 watt range, then an ion solution is starting to look better. Do you have 3 phase power and water cooling available? Is there someone there who can be trained to take care of an ion laser properly? And if it will be running in winter, you'll probably need a closed-loop system with antifreeze in it.

An ion solution will give you a better beam, and for an RGB system in the 5 to 6 watt range, an ion laser is probably going to be cheaper. But they're harder to maintain and they suck water and power like nobody's business. Keep that in mind...

well he would like it to be mobal, and to do beams & graphics & full color & he can trained to take care of an ion laser properly, he wants to use it for large outdoor events and to use an air screen....

if I can I would buy 2 of the 5 watt white light ion lasers and build 2 full color systems????

    I wouldn't buy from them....

You could also consider a Laserscope, I think that offers pretty good bang for the buck.

Only for beams, and new euro and US rules are possibly on the way that will ban qswitched laser show stuff. Dont ask where I heard that.

Not only Q-switched yags, pulsed lasers in general and I've heard that the jenlas whitelights are on the to be banned list.
