    Your plan should still work, you just need to plan it out right ahead of time. Also, since you can adjust polarity by rotating the diode you should be able to come up with a good layout. Just refer back to the post earlier where I described the difference between the fast axis and the slow axis. For vertical polarization, the fast axis should be vertical. For horizontal, the fast axis should be horizontal. In your picture of the diode spot on the card, the laser is very nearly horizontally polarized.

    You could put the lenses in a tube that slides inside a bore in your copper block and fix it with a set-screw
