Fair enough, but what about the large number of "us" who do both.. does the fact that we do both have negative connotations? Are we to be less respected because we like our right to own and use portable lasers? Are those of us who are responsible with the usage of portable lasers to be penalized because of the actions of a few idiots? As has been said about nine times in this thread, the problem is the people, not the hardware. Lasers are lasers, and I believe that all of us should have the right to own and discuss portable lasers. Safety is key, as well as education about these systems, but I'm not trying to hear about how laser display purists have some inherent inability to act like idiots themselves. Like I said previously: It's not unheard of for laser displays to cause injury (always due to user error). How does that affect "us"?
Regardless, I don't think this argument will ever be concluded, so all I would ask is that people remember that not everyone who owns a portable laser is an idiot that points them at planes, etc.. These blanket statements like "the actions of the pointer jockeys blah blah.." are annoying and disrespectful, not to mention ill-conceived.

At upwards of 100 incidents a day worldwide involving pointer aircraft illuminations, its more then a "few idiots".
Prior to the Los Vegas Incident, # of reported pilot illuminations (pre green dpss pointer) per year in the US: 2 total recorded over 10 years

I certainly understand what you're saying, Steve. I would never deny that these occurrences happen, and it is sad that they do, I'm just trying to point out that I feel that if someone wants to own, use, and discuss portable lasers they should be allowed to do so as long as said usage and discussion is legal. I also think that it is not unreasonable to place hard limits on the amount of power that portable lasers produce. Also, I feel that they should be sold as dangerous tools rather than toys. I think the best solution is a happy medium of some sort.
I do not, however, feel that it is OK to ban all things relating to pointers just because a person doesn't agree with them. I do not feel that it's OK to label an entire group of people as being "a load of immature numpties into targeting incoming aircraft, Police Helicopters, popping balloons and burning tape." Whatever a "numptie" is.. These things are symptoms of a childish superiority complex, nothing more. I can tell you that I own two portable lasers, and neither one of them has EVER been pointed at an aircraft or another living thing (except maybe a bug or two). I can also say that I have burned very little tape, and I haven't ever popped one single balloon. But I guess, since I have an interest in all forms of lasers and not just laser shows, that makes me an "immature numptie" or what have you.
As I said in my previous post, I don't think that this argument will ever cease, since there are good points in support of each viewpoint. I have little doubt that the only option at this point is to deal with whatever comes in the future of the laser hobby as it comes. Some things may be for the best, others will not. Laser pointers aren't going anywhere and neither are morons, so kick back, grab a cold one and watch the fireworks, baby..
