I just don't get the point of owning a 200mW green pointer, so maybe you could please explain it.

I very much enjoy my scanners, and I'll concede that doing shows is my favorite part of this hobby, far more so than any experience I have had with portables.

To answer your question: What's the point of having an Argon laser sitting on my bench? What's the point of painting my car purple and green if I want to? An explanation is not necessary, not to you or anyone.
I just like lasers. I like all types of them without discrimination. I also like my right to own dangerous toys if I want to.

I have already said twice that I would fully support a limit to how powerful portables can be, and 200mW is certainly a bit much, but 1mW is absurdly little. I have also conceded that there should be more enforced legislation prohibiting the use of high-powered portables in public. It seems that you are only reading parts of my posts and ignoring other key statements and concessions. I have already attempted compromise in several of my previous posts, and yet all you will settle for is acknowledgment that you are 100% correct. Infallible, even. You seem completely unwilling to concede that meeting in the middle somewhere is even an option. That's why I will refer to you fondly as "McCarrot the Dictator".

I have never seen a dumb kid ordering a high power argon in china for $100 and playing with it in a club or point it at a airplane.
But I do see this every week with pointers

Banning pointers will not discriminate us laserfreaks because we have argons to play with and they are much more fun compared to pointers.

Now these are both valid points. I have no argument with either of them, but they are not enough to warrant an outright ban on all portable lasers. My entire point throughout all of this has been that an outright ban on all portable lasers is much too extreme.

I also can't stand it when people make blanket statements about how an entire group of people is dumb or retarded (or any other negative connotation) simply because of their interests or beliefs. That kind of behavior borders on an unpleasant mindset that has led to many even more unpleasant times throughout the history of the world. When we refuse to acknowledge that each individual has their own strengths and weaknesses, we invariably have real problems as a society.

I watched to movie, I think its really scary to watch as a kid. But in the movie they say "If you see a flash, duck and cover" But with ElektroFreaks high power pointers its too late when you see the flash...

Too late for what? Do lasers cause a horrific death by vaporization, burns, or radiation sickness? Must have missed that part after all this time..

Seriously, though, I'll stop arguing with you if you can find me three irrefutable (government proven with medical documentation and backing) cases of irreversible total blindness (one or both eyes) or serious, life-changing injury to the vision that have been attributed to portable lasers and one irrefutable case of an aircraft of any kind being brought down with loss of life or limb by a portable laser in the last 5 years. By irrefutable I mean specific occurrences with complete descriptions of both the medical effects and the situation surrounding how the laser beam entered the eye. If it happens so often I would think you should have no problem with this.. The reason I ask is that these are the types of proof that legislators will want to see before they would consider an outright ban of all portable lasers. And they would need to see a LOT more than three occurrences.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that the VAST majority of laser-related injuries have occurred in a lab environment on professional equipment, and that they have happened to trained professionals who have forgotten more about lasers than most of us will ever know.

Anyhow, I think I'm going to stop here anyway because I can't think of anything that hasn't already been argued in this thread regarding portables. Anyone reading this will have no doubt made up their mind one way or another long ago..

What the heck is wrong with the existing limit of 4.95 mW of green? (US IIIA)

Nothing at all. It's the enforcement that is lacking (as far as the use of >5mW lasers in public). I think that in your own house you should be allowed to use a 500W portable if you want to (not that such a thing exists..)
