World's smallest laser created by scientists
Scientists have created the world's smallest laser after they squeezed light into a space smaller than a protein molecule.

    Published: 8:00AM BST 31 Aug 2009

The breakthrough heralds a revolution in optical technology, paving the way to ''nanolasers'' that can probe and manipulate DNA, and super-fast computers and telecommunications.

''This work shatters traditional notions of laser limits, and makes a major advance toward applications in the biomedical, communications and computing fields,'' said Professor Xiang Zhang, who led the US team.

The new ''plasmon'' laser compresses light into a gap five nanometres wide, the size of a single protein molecule.

A key step forward was the ability to confine light in such a small space long enough for it to stabilise into a ''coherent'' laser state, with all its waves in step.

Plasmons are the wave-like motions of excited electrons on the surfaces of metals. Binding light to these oscillations allows it to be squeezed much further than would normally be the case.

''Plasmon lasers represent an exciting class of coherent light sources capable of extremely small confinement,'' said Prof Zhang, from the University of California (UC) at Berkeley.

''This work can bridge the worlds of electronics and optics at truly molecular length scales.''

The scientists hope one day to shrink light down to the size of an electron's wavelength, about a nanometre, or one billionth of a meter.

Nanolasers could replace electronic circuits with optical ones that are much faster and more efficient.

The research was reported in the online version of the journal Nature.

Co-author Dr Thomas Zentgraf, from the same laboratory at UC Berkeley's Nanoscale Science and Engineering Centre, said: ''The advantages of optics over electronics are multifold. For example, devices will be more power efficient at the same time they offer increased speed or bandwidth.''

    Is BS...
    Plain and simple... IMO

Why do you bring this crap to the forum...

I'm happy for you if you believe... some people believe in Santa Clause and

Now the Nano Laser article IS interesting...

Default Here is a better article I posted a couple weeks ago..

Laser (the acronym derived from Light Amplification by Stimulated Emissions of Radiation) is a spectacular manifestation of this process. It is a source which emits a kind of light of unrivaled purity and intensity not found in any of the previously known sources of radiation. - Lasers & Non-Linear Optics, B.B. Laud.

Now that's more interesting... (more info and pics)..

how would it be quicker i wonder; surely you need the 'slow' electronics to power the laser and/or the receiving sensors etc?

Something doesn't add up here, maybe I'm missing the point but if this "nanolaser" only has a width of 5nm wouldn't it restrict it's output to less than 5nm?

i just copied and pasted an email with an article about laser technology that i was provided by the Raelian movement science email service

i thought it would have been some interest here, i really could'nt care less what u think of them or not to be honest laserbee, it was the science of lasers i was interested in sharing. i dont understand it too much myslef but i welcome discussion on the subject to help me uunderstand more, not a bickering debate of who is wrong a right

soo before u go to start pissing on my fire of believe, do some research that does not involve the mainstream media bullshit that u so obviosly wield in your hand - i aint a kid (santa/bunny wtf???) and my thoughts and concepts of humanity being created by another humanity is actually pretty simple and logical

also if i bring crap to this forum hence u are saying to me that i bring crap everywhere i go , i dont mind insults mate, i expect them from small and closed minded people

have a nice day and enjoy the article

    Adam,

I just found another article with better images and descriptions: http://www.photonics.com/Content/Rea...rticleID=39599

"While it is traditionally accepted that an electromagnetic wave - including laser light - cannot be focused beyond the size of half its wavelength, research teams around the world have found a way to compress light down to dozens of nanometers by binding it to the electrons that oscillate collectively at the surface of metals. This interaction between light and oscillating electrons is known as surface plasmons."

    Digging deeper: http://www.cchem.berkeley.edu/pdygrp/pubpdf/130.pdf

Okay now time for me to finish my coffee.

It all makes sense. Good stuff. But not as good as the LSD available in 1973.

    Thanks Adam!
That helped explain things a little more. Pretty awesome that they can pull that off. Hooray physics!
