Well, I guess I can reveal it now that everything worked out. (if I had failed, I'd have never mentioned it )

I used a pair of Sonima amps to drive them (Sonima is the company that makes the scanpros)

ps: I intend to do a review of the amps and Sonima as a company, I've gotten great service. They even sent the schematic for the amps to help me!

ya I dunno, I am totally willing to blame it on myself but my set of scanpro 40k scanners failed during SELEM... they had the old style motors, and I purchased a replacement set of motors (new type) the new motors seem to dissipate heat much better tho and have been working great so I'm not terribly concerned

Well Sonima is selling Scanpro sets with and without current limiting drivers.

The older design did not had current limiting so if your software make a big step there is a huge current flowing trough your galvo's.

The new drivers with current limiting will protect you galvos from meltdown.

also a good baseplate to absorb the heat from the galvo's will help in preventing a Chinese meltdown.

So thats why it's so important to have a scanfail especially when using Chinese galvo's.

Do you mean you've been scanning the ILDA test pattern at full angle? Because if this is true, you are pushing your scanners *way* beyond their abilities, and that is probably what is causing the excessive heat.

The ILDA test pattern is designed to be run at a shallow scan angle. The spec is 8 degrees, but most modern scanners can manage a little more than that. If you purchase faster scanners (DT-40's, or ScanPro 50's, for example), you can re-tune them for 30Kpps speeds, which will allow you to scan even wider.

Even so, the *best* I've ever seen was just under 20 degrees for the ILDA test pattern. And that is on a set of ScanPro 50's that I currently have installed in my projector, after a lot of careful tuning.

Note that the Scanpro's can actually scan a lot wider than 20 degrees on other frames. I measured a maximum of nearly 60 degrees on these things. But you can only scan simple patterns at that extreme angle.

It doesn't matter what brand of scanner you own, if you try to scan the ILDA test pattern at the scanners' full angle, you *will* overheat your scanners. Some scanner amps will detect this condition (high current sensor) and shut down. Others will keep running until you eventually ruin your scanners.

Maybe some clarification is in order.

I know that the ILDA pattern is not meant to be scanned so wide, but I noticed this when I opened the projector settings dialog in my pangolin software and as an effect of that some test pattern began scanning full angle. (this issue is solved in quickshow btw since now you have to click a button to enable the test pattern)

On the subject of the projector, I have painted the case this evening and tomorrow I will begin final assembly. So stay posted for pictures
