    Default FS: Coherent LaserCheck handheld power meter

    For sale is a LaserCheck in excellent working condition. Comes with the box, instructions, and plenty of battery life left. The only place you can get it that I'm aware of is the Coherent website for $400. I'm asking $325 shipped.

    LaserCheck
    Handheld Power Meter (RoHS)

    LaserCheck is an inexpensive, hand-held laser power meter that displays measurements on a built in LCD screen.

    * Hand-held laser power meter
    * Integrated sensor
    * Auto-ranging with peak sample-and-hold
    * Power measurement from 0.5 µW-1W
    * ±5% calibrated accuracy from 400-1064 nm
    * RoHS Compliant

    LaserCheck™ is a small, lightweight, self-contained power meter that can easily be stored in a pocket or tool kit.

    The instrument is micro-processor controlled with wavelength correction, auto-ranging (µW or mW displayed), power overload warning and automatic shutoff. At higher powers the embedded silicon photodiode is protected from saturation with a built-in optical attenuator.

    LaserCheck is supplied ready to use, complete with battery, integral pocket clip, storage case, CE certification and user instruction sheet.

    Question

    How old is it and when was it last calibrated?

    I bought it off a forum a year ago so I can't tell you the exact answer to either question. However, it has given consistent readings over time for both my 100mW and 300mW lasers.

    According to coherent, they don't calibrate them... The lifetime is supposed to be 3-5 years then you smash it on your forehead and buy a new one . I am pretty sure you could change the battery out again but then you would need a second power-meter to calibrate it (and find the calibration pot on the board) .

    Okay I just dug out the exact text from my Coherent laser measurement and control newsletter (August 25 2009)

    LaserCheck Recalibration
    Question: How often do the LaserCheck products need to be recalibrated?
    Answer: For most of our power and energy meter products, we recommend that they are recalibrated on an annual basis. The LaserCheck is a bit of different product; this meter has a limited lifetime due to the built-in battery. The LaserCheck typically has a lifetime of about 3 to 5 years depending on how often it is used. Due to this limited lifetime, we do not recommend the annual recalibration like with other products. Once the battery has drained, the intention is that the LaserCheck wil be disposed of, and a new one will be purchased. The specified calibration uncertainty on the LaserCheck of ±5% should be valid over the lifetime of the product without requiring recalibration.

    Laser (the acronym derived from Light Amplification by Stimulated Emissions of Radiation) is a spectacular manifestation of this process. It is a source which emits a kind of light of unrivaled purity and intensity not found in any of the previously known sources of radiation. - Lasers & Non-Linear Optics, B.B. Laud.

    I don't want to sound like the bringer of ill tidings...

    but I own 2 of these LaserChecks.. (there is supposed to be a NIST
    calibration certificate with it)...

    If you have nothing else they are OK... (and very portable) but they
    are far from consistant...
    I need to take about 5-7 readings to get 2 that are alike...(yes the
    Laser was stable)...
    With both of my 2 brand new purchased units there is a difference of
    10mW on the same 120mW 660nm laser...
    The LaserCheck is good if you want a fair idea of laser power...

    BTW they are lousy to check 405nm blu-rays...

    These come up on eBay once in a while for around $200.00US..

    Good luck with your sale...

    Alright then. Didn't know much about this unit. If it's worth $200, then I'll sell it for $200 shipped.

    The calibration is in eeprom in the lasercheck, and you can change the battery, but you must jumper clip in a spare battery while changing to keep the memory on older ones.

    I've never had a repeatability error with mine.
