Laser Warning Finaly a good use for hi power laser pointers

I came across an article in the Sun news paper today about BAe systems developing a High power laser pointer to be fitted on to Container and Oil Ships using the ocean between East Africa and India that use the Suez canal. The Idea is to use the laser to disorientate the Pirates trying to Hijack such vessels. Plus other technology being developed for the fight against the Pirates is a Radar system that can pick up a Dingy 15 miles away.

    Sorry, Still can't create links.

    Question

Wouldn't it be eaiser to just get a really big laser, CV or YAG in the ship's "hold" and run "fiber optic turrets" to the places where they planned on mounting the hand held lasers?

I am sure Paul has a big CV or Pat has a fatty YAG they can use to test.

I agree, these damn pirates are asking for it. We need to develop weaponized laser projectors.

I still don't know why they don't do what was done in the 2nd world war - have decoy ships.

Install hidden gun turrets inside fold down cargo containers and firing positions in a merchant ship then man it with Navy personal. Sail it into the piracy area and await an attack. As the pirates try to board, drop the sides of the containers and man the other firing positions and open fire.

You could even have an Apache gun ship in a clearing in the middle of the containers so it wasn't visible from the sea and launch it during an attack to chase and destroy any attackers that get away.

It seems these days as if shooting pirates isn't legal. However, isn't the US strictly still at war with Somalia so aren't these technically enemy combatants?

I agree; a well placed .30 round is going to be far more discouraging than a mildly annoying beam that you have to avert your eyes from.

    Heya All

I have some degree of sympathy for the pirates, their country should be an internation shame.

Living there for some people must be like living through a never ending auto accident.

Their territorial waters are pirated by interional fishing ships, forcing local fishermen to find 'other' means to support themselves and their families as the fish stocks collapse.

I spose they deserve everything they don't get, it's their fault for not having large proven reserves of oil under their country.

When i think of Africa my skin crawls like when you see a compound facture.

I'm fairly sure most of the pirates would prefer to do 'other' work, but the chances of that seem rather limited.

Whereas you can't deny that Somalia has it tough, I don't think that can be used as any justification for murder, extortion and kidnapping of innocent merchant sea farers and their cargos.

If you were to use the same justification then you could say people form the ghettos in our repective countries should have the right to car jack and murder people for their money because they have it bad also.

To my mind, the only way to stop piracy is to kill the pirates - make it so dangerous to commit piracy and so difficult to get away with that it simply isn't worth it. Isn't that what got rid of piracy the 1st time around? The fact that pirates were all hanged and the Royal Navy had a large number of ships deployed in Caribbean waters.
