    Why not use a linear CCD, and detect changes in the refractive index of the air? That way you could detect the pressure waves directly, and not have to worry about blowing the smoke around, as this design seems to.

    It sounds like they are using the suspended particles to get increased gain over recording difraction changes.

    I know one of the PhDs on a similar laser mic project, and if he's involved its not just blowing smoke. He has a track record of bring things in,on time, and on budget.
