    Default HDD fast shutter!

Looks pretty cool. Might have to try, considering how many dead hard drives we have lying around at work..

    Sweet!
That's pretty innovative. I'm gonna try this with an old laptop HD. Thanks for posting Dave!

    Thumbs up

Very nice; I have at least a half dozen dead drives in my closet.

what a pretty solution! We'll have to see how these work (I'm certainly going to build one).
the only issue is that I don't see how it can protect on power failure, since it has to energize to block the beam.

    Magnets? Springs?
But then again, why wouldn't anything else work if magnets and springs can be used?

The only problem I see with this is that you'd always have to overcome the static pull, thusly heating the coil while on... but the failure case is always safe

Yeah, not exactly a safety shutter the way it's designed on the website but it could be with a circuit change and a return spring.

The H-bridge driver protects the voicecoil from overheating.

IF you want a analog way of driving it instead of the digital, try the attached schematic. The resistive network at the right side adds negative feedback and damping. If you need to zero it, you can apply the zeroing signal to the offset port.

This looks really cool. If it can be verified that I can use it legally, I'll definitely be interested in making a couple of these.
