Way back in 1988 we designed a Laser Thread break Detection system for the Pulp and Paper industry.

It detected any "ends" breaking while weaving the "felt" (the screen that the paper pulp is dried on).
The "ends" could be as small as .006" and the LTD needed to check for breaks over a max distance of
90 feet.. And since it was used in a wide open non air conditioned areas... the system had to ignore
flying insects that may pass through the beam.. Not to mention the huge vibrations of the machine its
self over the 90 feet width..

It was our first encounter with a Laser (HeNe 632.8nm 5mW) and we were absolutely amazed at that
    solidly defined red beam...

(sorry for the low quality of the pic)

particule cooling is done with blue lasers, mainly argon-wavelength, but 473nm lasers might work

measurements of refractive indexes are also done with lasers

there are also some uses with stroboscopic effects where a variable speed scanned beam might be used to visualize movements
