Default No H&S restrictions on Audience scanning?

    Anyone familiar with V3D software.

I came across this from an ILDA members site and wonder about the claims:

    http://www.laserelectronicsltd.com/v3d.htm

    "
No Health and safety restrictions when using video projector for crowd scanning effects.

Totally safe to the human eye."

Seems a bit of a bold claim especially when connected to a multiwatt projector. Does this have a software based PASS style system in place or am I right to be sceptical?

I think it uses a standard video projector to simulate the effects of a laser,

Yes you're right I missed that bit. Wondered how they could make those claims.

I finished up there because I saw some of this software in action with a laser last night but I think it was the Zion software. Looked just like a simpler version of LivePro.

    I like this line...

"The four pictures below are of V3D using a 15k ansi lumen projector to emulate laser effects within a Nightclub"

Have you seen the price of those 15k projectors , they are what's being used for outdoor projections onto the sides of buildings etc. Mega powerful.

I recently priced a 5.5k Sanyo for a business idea... Gulp!

I don't think they'll be replacing lasers anytime soon

The software is about £1500 to buy. I think I'd rather be buying some proper coherent light for that money.

I have a couple of 5K lumen projectors that I have been known to play similar games with (bit of haze, laptop with suitable screensaver.... (Note haze is bad for video projectors unless the beam path is sealed)), very useful for beefing up a 3 head show, but nor really a substitute.

I suspect that Clive is selling it aiming at venues that already have serious video installations.
You can pick up a 5K projector for about £400 if you don't mind, big, butch and excessively heavy.

The fact that there is no eye safety problem means that you can reasonably use them at low level behind DJs and such, where audience scanning lasers are always a bit more of a headache.

    Regards, Dan.

Projectors are EXTREMELY expensive. Although they have come quite a way in the past decade or so. The line I am most familiar with is Barco. They have a mechanical shutter to achieve a COMPLETE blackout, all controllable through DMX. You could even switch video inputs with DMX. I do have to admit, using a 8-10k projector for "laser-like effects" works pretty well. It does take some playing around though.

    Apparently in this video:

Video projectors are used to do either some of the graphic work, or maybe some of the scanning. I cant remember, but it was talked about on some thread here at PL.

Personally, I wouldn't want to be facing the lens of one of those either. If it's capable of producing mid-air beams like a laser does, it probably throws out similar power densities as well (and thus can exceed MPE).

I don't know if anyone ever calculated the power density for a 2kW or even 5kW HMI profile theatre spot, but the beams on those are pretty damn narrow and people stare into those all the time. I'm guessing those things can give a 1W laser a run for its money when it comes to grunt per square mm.
