My friend who has a 168 actually got a closed loop chiller, which gobbles up another 32A of three-phase power off the wall alongside the 32A which was eaten by the 168 head!

If the unit is OK to run on tap water (the water in Eindhoven doesn't have a high mineral content), then there won't be a big problem.

here is the picture of the inside of the 265

4 cables: black, green, yellow and red

i tested it on tap water.
if it needs demineralised water how much? i can get empty 1000L tanks
We'll be OK in Eindhoven for runs on tap water. The 265 seems to have its wires fixed to the board, three phases and earth.

mixedgas: Do you have the service manual for the 265/168 in PDF? If I have a version of that I can figure out where the 3ph wires go and their current ratings. If the cable is indeed hard-wired into the PSU, we need some spare terminals.

You could always use an in-line demineralising cartridge (very popular in my town due to imense lime levels).

Or bolt it to the case in a place that's a little more accessible?

I'd hate to see him take that 265 apart solder joint by solder joint, only to find that the ground screw is right at the most inaccessible corner at the bottom.

That might be an issue, the head cable has quite a few different wires in there and having them short out is bad news. Especially the tube wires (two big ones) shorting out with low voltage or signal wires can cause quite a few problems... if the PSU is shorted when you hit the igniter, it's time for fireworks!

If the cable is obviously damaged, nicked or kinked, please post a photo of it.

On a ion laser, if the head cable is shorted, the fireworks will occur long before you hit ignite. Probably shortly after the timeout relay for the cathode heat has timed in.

Yeah please keep the camera rolling when you turn on the power. I love fireworks.
