    Default Odd HeNe

Ok I just got the newest member to my growing gas laser family
This is a Jodon 40mw HeNe. I has things Ive never seen before on a HeNe, like Brewsters, removeable lenses, and a pulse starter!?
The color is odd too,at frist I thought great its got alot of air in the tube, but after running for a hour the color started to come around, still not a true HeNe color but its getting there!!
And this thing gets hot!! The PSU has a fan in it.
This is a new one on me....
Now if only it would lase for me
    heres some pics.

Thats a 10 mW jodon. The 40 mW sticker is the twice the maximum power it could generate if it malfunctioned perfectly.

Jodon is still in business. They make henes tailored for holography.

They also made IR ones, so you need to call them and ask what it is, or see if a red hene reflects off the front mirrors

Your gonna need to run that for a long, long , time for gettering action to complete, probaby 20x the time it needed to start to clear up.
Leave it run, and run, and run. Nitrogen, the purple stuff, poisons lasing. You need the getters to burn out the nitrogen.

If it is a hot cathode Jodon, ie a there is a glowing heater instead of the al tube, your used to, You have another issue. Once it is cleared up, You may need to switch to the reserve cathode. Yes, those had backup cathodes in most cases.

Call Jodon, as I think some of those had active gettering that could be turned on.

AFAIK Jodons tend to use epoxy for brewsters (instead of frit-seal), so that's the most probable path out for Helium atoms. And once it's gone - it's gone

I've had 50/50 shots with placing them in a garbage bag for a day filled with helium. well, maybe 60/40.

I dont want to discourage the lad, but the odds of lasing at more then a mW, at best.........

Matt, Start asking me before you buy any more gas stuff would ya?

    Lightbulb

Well this is the first HeNe that has not want to lase for me....
Wow!! I read that on SAM I didnt know it would work or not...
One thing, the color is turning more pinkish now, but If I hit it with my tester it looks just like a normal HeNe... Could it be a power issue?
Ill ask you first next time..

Helium is small, and it diffuses like mad.

Only on epoxy sealed tubes. sometimes it will work on newer ones, but it takes 2-3 weeks at room temp and you have to check it each day. Warning, do not run the power supply in the helium, the arcs in pure helium are spectacular, even at 14 psi.

I tried that with an SP124 and it seemed to help quite a bit. The thing would turn on and lase, but now and then would just wink. I threw it in a bag with helium for about 3 weeks. After that, the thing would run fine, until about a year later it started the winking problem, but the trick seemed to work anyway.

Helium for 3 weeks in a bag ... I bet You must have used a certified helium-leak-detector-checked bag ... or it was continually overpressured with He
