Default All I want for christmas is a,,,,,, SUPERCOMPUTER!!!

My company worked it out so I could budget in this awesome build since one of our customers needed a few custom computers. It's been 6 years since I did a major upgrade so of course I went all out...

Dual VelociRaptors in RAID 0 Oh Yeah!!!

Damn power supply weighs like 15 lbs alone. 80A on the 12V line.

I went with an air cooled CPU cooler this time. Water cooling just needs too much maintenance.

    Here are the specs:
    Lian Li PC-1200V case
    Asus Rampage II MoBo
    920 i7 Core CPU (CO'd to 3.4GHz ,,, currently. Heading for 4GHz.)
    6GB Corsair Dominator DDR3 RAM
    1050W ABS SL power supply
2 WD VelociRaptor 150GB harddrives (in RAID 0)
    1 1TB WD drive
2 500GB WD drives, Backup and DVR.
24X Samsung DVD burner.... BluRay too expensive still....
Cooler Master V8 CPU cooler (this thing is huge!!)

    On backorder....
    Nvidia GTX 295 graphics card
    2 - 24" Asus LCD monitors

    Is it fast......

uh,,, YEAH! Can't wait to edit a video on this sucker!

Nice machine. Hope it's silent enough. :-)
I'm with Lian-Li cases for many years, they simply rule.

    Thanks!
Amazingly quiet... The fan controller on this Mobo is tits! You wouldn't know it's running except for the power and HDD lignts on the front. Now, when you put it on stress test and max out all the cores it sounds like a damn hair dryer and draws as much current as one. It's almost impossible to stress this computer with any of today's programs though.

I love Lian-Li cases. Light all aluminum construction and well designed.

    great setup!

I did the same thing last year, and it proved to be the best thing I could do

I have basically the same architecture here, twin velociraptor, multicore CPU, vast amount of RAM (mine is 8Gb), and a big graphic card

when you build something, buid it to last a long time! that's the way!

I have an almost identical machine. The only real difference is graphics cards (nice btw) and I have two intel x25m-g2 ssd's in raid 0.

I'm also thinking to have a try at SSDs, and updating my graphic card to another model... the radeon 4850 is a bit buggy, and it crashes many games

I need to build a new rig, editing HD is a ballache with a 3 year old machine.

Without meaning to piss on your parade, I built a high spec unit very similar for a customer a month or two ago:

    Intel i7 950 - 3.06GHz clocked to 4.00GHz
    12GB of Corsair DDR3 RAM
    3TB RAID5 for data pool
250GB Solid State boot drive (Averages 218MB/s Read!)
2x GTX 295's in Quad SLI
    1KW PSU
    1x Blu-Ray drive
    2x 24x DVD-RW
    Coolermaster Cosmos case

It is by no exaggeration the fastest PC I have ever built. If only I could afford one for myself!
Those solid states are sublime! The very low access times make the system feel a thousand times faster than anything else I've used. As for the graphics cards - just epic...
