If I take a Millennia, which is already CDRH compliant and everything (every possible safety feature possible, and put a set of scanners in a CDRH compliant enclosure on it, do I need to get the whole thing varianced?

Yes.
you wont need to do a product report, but you will need to do a laser light show report and an application for a variance
ILDA- U.S. Laser Regulatory Committee
Authorized Dealer for:
- Pangolin Laser Software and Hardware
- KVANT Laser Modules & Laser Systems
- X-Laser USA
- CNI Lasers
- Cambridge Technology & Eye Magic Professional Scanning Systems
FDA/CDRH Certified Professional LuminanceRGB Laser Light Show Systems
still need to get the completed projector's product report, regardless of the safety features allready inplemented to the millenia,,
on top of the variance and laser show report.....
RGB laser projectors
Pangolin Beyond .NET
APC40 Midi controllers
Pangolin FB3 controllers
DZ splitter
LS MegaWatt Green Machine
he said that the projector is already certified. If the enclosure is already certified, it will already have an accession # (or variance #) also, he is using a certified Laser system.
The 2 combined will only require a LLSR and a variance app.
The LLSR and Variance asks if you are using certified equipment, which ben is. It is the same for all of us who use LT1000 (and LT500) cases. They are pre-certified enclsures. therefore whatever is built into it will not need a new product rport. as long as the end product satsfies safety regulations and the original approval criteria for the LT1000.

oops , my bad,,, i thought he said, that only the laser was compliant....![]()

Did he? I thought he said the laser was certified. I didn't see any mention of a projector...
Also, I'm unclear what a "Coherent Millennia" is... I know that Spectra-Physics has a Millennia (it's a really nice DPSS green), but what is a Coherent Millennia? A quick google search didn't provide any clues either.
If Ben is trying to install a new laser into an existing projector that already has a variance, it is my understanding that he must file a laser product *modification* report, unless the laser he is installing is already covered with the variance on the existing projector. So he'd really need to read the variance for that projector housing first. (Some housings, like the LT-1000, will allow you to install any laser that fits in the box and is under 10 watts without filing a modification report, but that is by no means the norm.)
I have a varianced projector housing (now gutted) that I thought would make things very easy for me, but after reading the original variance, I see it was written with just 1 laser (the original Lexel Color Pro that it came with) in mind. Thus, since I plan to use different lasers (obviously), I need to file a modification report. I believe Ben's situation may fall into this exact same category.
Exactly! This is what I was talking about. If Ben has an LT-1000 case, then he *should* be OK. But if he's got some other case, he's going to need to see what was listed in the original approval criteria for that case before he assumes he doesn't need to file a modification report. They are pre-certified enclsures. therefore whatever is built into it will not need a new product rport. as long as the end product satsfies safety regulations and the original approval criteria for the LT1000.

Okay, so it seems that it will require paperwork anyways. That is what I was looking for.
Adam, where did you get "Coherent Millennia"?
