I don't know what others do, but we just use a lab power supply with voltage readout..

That is usually how I do it as well but not everyone can afford to spend $150 or more on a decent power supply. It would be nice if there was just something small that would be able to be taken as diagnostics.

Isn't that VERY simple to design/make?
4x 1,5V AA battery, 5V regulator, some potmeters (RGBVYC + int) and DB-25 output? In a small neat box?
The problem with potentiometers is that they arent linear all the way round. Your laser brightness would slowly creep up, and when you hit a certain point on the pot, it would rapidly increase in brightness.
He also said it would have a readout to tell you what voltage its outputting.
Err, you can buy pots that are linear and buy ones (usually used for audio) that are logarithmic.
If you just use the linear ones you should have no problem.

You need to add a function generator. Most analog lasers don't react the same to a dc signal as an analog signal. You need the function generator to look for problems in blanking.
