The one you linked to is a standard spark-gap tesla coil. You can't modulate that to play music.

You need a solid state tesla coil if you want to play music.

The one I linked to in my post above (for $5500) is their "medium size" solid state tesla coil. It's only slightly larger than the one you linked to, but it can play music.

The one John has is smaller and requires an extra component to play music (a modulator), but otherwise it will work. And in kit form it's actually pretty affordable. It's only 2 ft tall though.

And yes, as John said, the medium size one from one tesla is still very small.

Damn... I think I'm getting hooked.

I've watched that "Sweet Home Alabama" video at least a dozen times, and I still haven't gotten sick of it yet.

How cool would it be to have two tesla coils at SELEM next year?

Hmmm. Maybe I can sell a kidney or something.

Yeah.... that Sweet Home Alabama video hasn't gotten old. I've watched it a bunch of times too! I think this needs to happen.

They Are awesome. I have ran mine sync'd to a laser show. Modulating to the music. That's why I wanted duals to set to a differnent note. But that enemy time gets in the way. Mine makes about 3' arcs, but I am using dryer vent flexible aluminum as my torrid not a real spun one. Thinking I could get better arcs but the $$$ for a nice torrid is crazy.
Also have used it in my Halloween display frying the guy in the electric chair.

Wow - 208C 3 phase. The ones I've been looking at don't draw that much power. Then again, these guys are doing shows all over the place, so their equipment is probably pretty beefy. And 3 phase power is ubiquitous in a stage environment...

The can-crushing coil was pretty cool too. But I hate to think how much that capacitor bank costs! (Or how much it weighs!)

The primary is also very easy to construct by just cutting up a cutting board.

This is the second one I really should finish to have duals

My goodness, what did I start! You realized we had no clue the MIT kids were bringing up a tesla coil. They just appeared 3 hours before the show saying "Where can we set up?" Just remember a million electron volts and static sensitive LD diodes do not really mix. You need to separate the two by a wide distance.
