Most likely flashlamp pumped, at that price. The rep rate is the give away. No eye protection for the patient and staff i is a No-No.

The United States military tested an X-ray laser pumped by a nuclear weapon in the 1980s, but the results of the test were inconclusive and it has not been repeated.

$hitty money hole is more like it

    Rephrase that to:

Since Table top x-ray laser like devices were just starting to work in the 80s, clever marketing people tried to convince the Soviet Union that they were behind in the space based, nuclear pumped, X-ray laser race and that they had to spend money to catch up, in the cold war game to see who would win by getting their enemy to crash their economy first.

X ray laser in this case was rumored to mean a telephone pole sized laser medium strapped to the side or end of bomb.

Depends on how you want to look at it, but 25 years later, after their economic crash, the Russians have paid off most of the their national debt and have the least national debt of any G20 nation.

    Cool

There are a couple ways to pump an X-ray laser. One is with a thermonuclear device. The other is with an operating fission reactor. Either one will work, but neither one is very practical for a deployable weapon system.
