    Default Using 445 diodes as a PUMP source?

    Just a thought, but does anyone know of a laser medium that would accept pump at 445 with output elsewhere in the visible spectrum?

    Alexandrite does not count (755 hardly counts as visible).

    I am pretty sure some dyes will pump acceptably at this wavelength, which gets yellows and reds at the cost of major engineering pain (CW dye is hairy to implement, 3 level system, self terminating, pain), but if there was anything solid state?

    The quantum deficit from 445 to 650 or so is painful, but if you could get 20% conversion (the limit is about 60% due to the deficit) that would be ruled a win.

    You could probably build a dye rig with these diodes as pump, bring the diodes to a line on the flowing dye on the inside of an AR coated cell, and total internal reflect the intracavity beam off the wall of the dye cell, 20W or so of pump power might get you a few watts of red or yellow with MUCH better beam quality then the pump sources had.

    Just a thought.

    pulsed yag, pulsed ruby, all like violet pumping. Dye of course, and some metal vapors.

    Iodine for one, but since I've only done that at green, I have no idea how well it will work at blue, but you will see a glow from the vapor, no matter what,

    pulsed yag, pulsed ruby, all like violet pumping. Dye of course, and some metal vapors.

    Iodine for one, but since I've only done that at green, I have no idea how well it will work at blue, but you will see a glow from the vapor, no matter what,

    This might be how the fellow that is selling the room temp cw ruby the size of a soda can is doing it.

    lots of IR stuff would take a blue pump..

    What I'd like to do is stick one in a littman-metcalf cavity and get narrow linewidth for dichromated gelatin holography.

    CW Ruby? I don't know if the pump absorption band extends far enough (The references I can find are pumping with 514 Green from an argon)

    I wonder if you could end pump a heavily doped ruby disk to make a 694nm CW red?

    It just might be a cost effective way to get a few hundred mW of deep red with acceptable beam quality.

    Even with an external cavity, SLM is normally very temperature and current sensitive, but it does work with some red diodes.

    Coherent uses a 488nm source to create the lovely 639nm out of the red OPSL

    UPDATE< they use 532 to pump the ruby. Using a double resonant pump cavity. How the ^%##* they get the heat out of the ruby, I dont know, but they are claiming 5-7x better doubling with the resonant doubling scheme. Previous cw lasing of ruby used Ln2 as the coolent.

    You want 445nm pump? How about 2W of it?

    Here is a unique custom laser Coherent made for KLA-Tencore. It is a CW 360nm 20mW SLM system, all solid state.

    Here is how it works:

    Seed Laser: Pr+3:YLF pumped with a 100mW 458nm OPSL Sapphire to generate 720nm.

    Amplifier: Pr+3:YLF pumped with 2 1W 445nm Nichea units to amplify 720nm.

    Doubler: External Resonant Ring LBO doubler to generate 360nm with an output of 20mW @ 360nm.

    I already did Alexandrite, but not with diodes, with LEDs (much higher power).
