No, its not a LM317 driver.. That TO220 is a low dropout regulator.. It looks like the rest of it is a constant current driver, very similar to a die4drive

That one must be a late model....it has a PCB of sorts....most of the circuit was a dead bug package and a lot of the parts had the nomenclature dremeled away.

I'm having a hard time finding $279 worth of parts there...
Even when you consider the time to assemble everything, there was clearly a healthy profit margin on those things. And I find it difficult to accept that Marconi "hand-tuned" each of the drivers, as he claimed numerous times. There's nothing to tune!

I aquired a second hand Maxy with a dead diode some months ago so I decided to open it up and frankly was amazed at the heath robinson construction, which made me glad that I had not ever purchased one for full cost. I think the key to these is simply the optics Chuck used and diode which I seem to remember him being (righty) secretive over. Looking at the one I have I doubt there is anything that sophisticated in the driver to make it outstanding.

I'm sure a lot of the big boys eg. CNI would be interested to know given the beam specs.
Simple, it's made of a long-die diode thats driven way over spec.
Unlikely any of the manufacturers would be interested in doing that, in fact they (the good ones that is) will run the diodes quite a bit below spec to achieve a log life.
