Look at the beam specs! They're more like flashlights than lasers.
Adam
Well, you can't have everything;)
Why not? :D Where is it written?
Seriously - I'd like to see a red diode with the optical quality of a Maxyz module that makes 500 mw... I know Marconi is looking into the problem, but the fact remains that once you get much above 200 mw, the emitter face on the diode gets big and thus the beam quality goes to hell.:(
Maybe in another year or two we'll see some improvement. Dunno...
Sigh... If only Krypton lasers weren't such a bitch to set up and operate!
Adam
So, what would be the expected beam size of a 100x1 uM aperature?
And would the divergence go to hell too? I'm thinking increased power for beam-shows only, not graphics..
Is there a gradient index lens formula somewhere that is used to calculate these factors?
wonder how much they are?
Don't know yet, I'll send in a request for a quote in a bit.
Well, for beamshows the divergence might not be such a bad thing. You could always blow up the beam diameter on your green and blue laser to get them close to the red...
The real problem is getting the beam to fit on the scanner mirrors. But once you get past that, the high divergence isn't so much of an issue with a beamshow... (You're already spreading the beam out all over the room.)
Adam
Yeah I was thinking slow scanners with larger mirrors..
Wouldn't be up to par for most, but for me it'd fit the bill;)
- for uncomplicated beamshows; slow moving sheet of light, tunnel etc..
With lots of nice varying shades of colors tho:)
rpmc are great but really fucking expensive. You can get a chinese module ready built for the same price of one of their laser diodes.
We have two 400mw 635nm lasers, one actually is making 730mw... the other is doing about 450mw.
The beam profile is a stripe.... down dave's driveway, about 30m away, the beam was about a foot wide, a big rectangle.
However we did a lasershow with one of these sitting atop our full colour, which has an arctos red (tight beam), and you couldn't really tell that it was such a fat beam....
the great thing about these lasers is that you can really easily combine lots of them, being that the beam is so big coming out of the thing.. you could line up 5 or 6 of them next to each other, get a nice square beam, and then run another 5 or 6 through the same setup and mix the two using a PBS.
Hmm. 12 x LP635-600..... ;)
Then just expand the green and blue beams using lenses to match the red.
Nice, safe, bright RGB.
Square or rectangle works for me.. a beam's a beam (as long as its a laser :) ) for beamshows anyway. What kind of laser is this y'all were using?
A foot at 20 meters? That divergence doesnt sound real good. Probably could tighten that up a bit with cylindrical or grin lens? Sounds cool though..
Talking about BIG red beams, here is one that I thought I would share with you all. It is called appropriately enough, BigRED.
It is by a friend, Casey Stack, who among many other things is one of the co-authors of the ilda test pattern.

2.5watts spec (3Watts)

deliverable in various configurations.. but this one represents 15mm
beam diam and about 4mrad divergence...
Multimode
OHHHH! Thats NICE:D :D :D :D
Are there plans?:D:D
What scanners did thet use for that?
Laser compliance huh? I didnt see no warning stickers:D :D :D
--It is beautiful engineering tho :)
Adn what diodes??
4mrad@15mm?
YUK!!!!!!!!!!!!
I dont mind a fat beam as long as it's super bright and the divergence is ok. Maybe it could be re-collimated with a rifle scope ( I've heard of this being done- dont know if it works..)
Come on dave... It IS over two watts... I'm not too find of the higher reds but it has a nice footprint. It'd be nice to see if he can get that much power but in 670 or so. >:)
Does he sell those things or is that an original one piece only hand-made jobber?
I am thinking the beam shot with him in it looks orange, but the shot in the club looks red...
Maybe different cameras or the lighting affects color balance.. dont really know. Did Casey Stack build that laser himself? -or with help -or is it some sort of oem? (I know I couldnt afford one -just curious)
Hi guys, yes Casey manufactured the laser, yes it has a big beam, but it is super bright. I use CTI 6250 scanners with 14mm mirrors tuned to 12K.
Oh, the photos are with diff cameras, obviously
It is truly an amazing laser and projector!
Please feel free to ask any questions.
Not much info on the 'big red' on that site. I guess he just built that 1 and uses for his shows...
You could use these GSI M3 scanners although they're not very fast with the big mirrors attached.
If the mirror size is close to 14mm then you are OK....
Do you think Casey would share an internal view of that monster with us?:)
Well the best speed I got for these M3 scanners was around 4K PPS using
a modified LSDI TurboTrack 2 Amp. They were ok at small angles but I wouldn't recommend them for Light Show use. I don't know if they would be any faster with the GSI Mini sax drivers they were designed for. As far as I know, they can still be obtained and I have two more I'd be willing to sell.
Hey Chad -

... that is, without a doubt, the coolest use of a butter dish I have ever seen...:D
Do you know if Casey still has this unit? ...Might he consider X-renting it? (you see where this is going, don't you? http://www.photonlexicon.com/forums/...ead.php?t=4638
..lemme know, if ya can, ASAP... :)
thanx..
J
Hi John,
I will call Casey tomorrow, I haven't talked to him in a while and need to catch up. I can't remember if he has it or if Kyle has it. I will find out.
And it very well could be a butter dish ;)
Chad
here u go guys a 500mw 670nm diode
http://laserdiode.ca/Laserdiodes_Son...serdioden.html
$453.52/ea
Andy, we were looking for 500 mw of red at 660 nm, or better yet 635 nm. Also, we wanted the beam quality to be close to that of a 660 nm Maxyz module.
670 nm is just too far down in the band to be really useful. You'd need something like 3-4 watts to make it look as bright as 500 mw of 635 nm red.
Besides, if I'm reading the .pdf scpec sheet for that diode correctly, it's got the divergence of a floodlight! No good for our use. If you decided you were going to use 670 nm anyway, you'd be better of going with 671 nm from a DPSS solution. At least that way you could get multiple watts of power and still have great beam quality. (But you'd still have the problem with low visibility, not to mention the cost!)
Adam
I have such a diode of 500mW 671nm. I think it may be fun to add some deep red to a projector.
The divergence is very nice! Keep in your mind that the divergence in the datasheet is directly out of the diode.
Compare this to some 635 or 658nm and I think the beam after collimator will be very nice.
But indeed visability is low of 671nm!
The link is a few post above. Here is the datasheet:
http://laserdiode.ca/detay/sony_lase...t/sld1332v.pdf
Sony made these diodes.
http://www.photonlexicon.com/forums/...1&d=1186269937
Wow, with those rounded corners and off-white color, all you have to do is cover the rear in some bakelite and you have yourself big red from the '40s' :D
Totally, Then all you would need to do is add one of these for the emission indicator ;)
Chad
Yeah, and lots of chrome, everywhere! And maybe some big rocket fins in the rear :D
Hi, I had a Sony SLD1332V a few weeks ago (from BFI Optilas, ist was about € 360+tax) but it was dissappointing because of the 100µm stripe, also it can only be operated at 25°C (TEC and precooling must have).
Additional, the 671nm made the (fat) beam pretty dark.
I sold it on ebay for poor €160 :(
Greets, Jo
How about 500mw 635nm 100 micron emitter or 300mw 60micron emitter- this is what I've been working on for a bit (along with the modified 636 Maxy.. and the 636mellesGmodule.. The mod-Maxy has a better beamspec at the ap.. I'm working on the far-field now..
The rep says he can work with me on the price for a proto for the 300/500 mw... The divergence is standard for the 635s, but I got rave reviews at my last show:D 635-636 ooohhh... It's a big beam, but when it's outside way up in the air you do want people to see it:cool:
60 micron ain't too bad. what sort of divergence do you think you could attain with that ?
Hey Aijii;
I don't know what the divergence values are for Steve-O's rig, but there is a good way to make an aproximation... See that red dot in Steve-o's avitar? That's from one of those 636 nm diodes he has, shining across his lawn to a tree at the far end of his property. Compare the red spot to the blue spot right next to it from his LaserWave DPSS blue.
They look pretty close to me... I think there's real potential here, assuming Steve-O can find a reliable source for the corrective optics he's using. I'm looking forward to seeing the rig in person at SELEM.
Adam
Perhaps steve-o could jump in here and confirm the spec of the beam he's getting from those ML520G51's?
I suspect the initial beam may be quite large when the distant spot is that small.
I gues I was wrong. The emittersize is big, but divergence small.
Means like it will still be a big beam....
Sorry -probly wont make it to Selem. Yes the tree is about 100 ft away -You're right Adam it's right next to Bridge's Bluey. The beam is tighter farther than it is closer.. heh.. used the melles-griot module.. but if I can xperiment with a varible prism setup in the future..:),, who knows..
Damn Steve, that sucks. :( Was looking forward to seeing you there.Quote:

Adam
Thanx Adam,
Yeah it sucks, lack-of-cash issues and no vacation time left at work .. heh..
I'll keep working on the 635s tho-- 'tis my favorite color :)
I got an idea using a single optic for a fast-axis tamer,,we'll see how it goes..
Have a good one--

Here you go ....just for you.....new 160mw 635nm unit......
Awesome, Mike!
When did'cha come up with that? After the white-light pointer, I suppose..:D
