Believe me, Richard - it was the *last* thing I thought I ever needed to post.
The funny thing is that the advice was not predicated on any one person, or even on a group of people. It was essentially legal advice based on previous events (not laser related) that went bad, and had nothing specifically to do with lasers, SELEM, or PhotonLexicon in general. Nevertheless, it came from several people whom I consider to be much smarter than I am, and I respected their advice.
You know the saying that you must always consider the price of failure in your risk analysis, and not just the likelihood of failure? That's basically what happened here. I personally think the CHANCE of something happening to be damn near zero. But the cost to me (in terms of my personal risk) if something did happen could potentially be very great. Thus, I decided to go against my better judgment and post the statement above.
Hey, if you're confused, you should see how I feel! I'm just in this gig for the cool laser shows, you know? Now suddenly I'm a promoter with responsibilities? ME? When did that happen? (YGBSM!)

It's a shame though cus what we all are is basically a bunch of enthusiasts getting together for a good time.
I can't believe that anything would "kick off" at a LEM, not least of all because we all have valuable sensitive equipment there that runs into the thousands of dollars (pounds, shekels, drachma etc.) that we value.
Once terms like "Organizer", Health and Safety", Litigation", "Risk Management", "Responsibility" etc. start getting bandied about then we are just a few steps from Event Insurance, Security, increased costs to cover these features etc. and the whole thing loses its "Amateur status".
Ahh well... at least I can say "I was there back when it was just a bunch of like minded (grown up) individuals out for a good time....."![]()
Me neither, Richard... Me neither.
And therein lies the risk...we all have valuable sensitive equipment there that runs into the thousands of dollars (pounds, shekels, drachma etc.) that we value.
I'm with you there, pal. I *hate* this kind of crap. And if it wasn't for the fact that it was suggested not once, not twice, but 3 times by 3 different people, I never would have even thought about it. I still don't like thinking about it, for that matter...Once terms like "Organizer", Health and Safety", Litigation", "Risk Management", "Responsibility" etc. start getting bandied about then we are just a few steps from Event Insurance, Security, increased costs to cover these features etc. and the whole thing loses its "Amateur status".
I still think that we're all grown ups, and that we're all just in this to have a good time.Ahh well... at least I can say "I was there back when it was just a bunch of like minded (grown up) individuals out for a good time....."![]()
But yeah, a little piece inside me died when I decided to write that post above.
Adam
Thanks for all you do Adam.
A few people who just think of themselves, and have the attitude that anything bad that happens to me is someones fault, ruin it for the vast majority.
Our increasingly litigenous society is feed by greed and the feeling that because I am born I have a right to a perfect life.
I have a son and brother-in-law who are lawyers, and they tell me horror show examples of people who's only intension is to do good, and they get screw**
On the flip side I sincerely don't see any of us being like that, but who knows can someone with the name 300EVIL be normal?![]()

No, and this was one of the things I wanted to address. We won't be handling any sort of disruption ourselves. In the *highly* unlikely event that something happens, we'll let the police deal with it.
I really didn't mean to spook anyone with this post. Personally, I think all this legal boilerplate crap is, well, crap. But I also understand that it needs to be stated explicitly, if only to cover our ass. (Well, to cover mine anyway.)
Adam
Hey Adam,
To be honest... I think we have enough maturity in that room to overcome any stupidity that any single situation may uproar. I think that in the event that anything does happen... not only will the cost of the lawsuit slapped in their face for damaged equipment (in the tens of thousands if a single table is dropped or knocked and in the hundreds of thousands if a person is physically injured)... but also the fact that there will probably be 20 other people willing to dissolve the issue or take it elsewhere will deter any potential 'idiocy' that may come up!
Regards... and looking forward to an awesome weekend! WOO HOO!![]()

John and Mo:
I agree 100% with both of you. And I *do* believe that this is going to be a great event, just like all the previous ones. We all seem to get along very well, so why should this event be any different, right?
I don't mean to drag everyone down with this. This isn't a buzz-kill. In fact, I'm so damn keyed-up for SELEM I can't concentrate on my job at all this week. (Which is why I'm posting here instead of working!Whee!) So yeah, let's all get ready to have a blast!
