i still dont unserstand the problem, why dont you post some pics of your setup?

ok, this is mine, (for myself, for private use)
nice looking unit you've got there.. what kind of beam specs r u getting???
Lasers, Lights, Music, Action!
Beam is 4mmx4mm, two 658nm @200mw and two 640nm @150mW all at 15° (european units..sorry)
the cube is a 5x5x5 mm.
And I forgot, that's a good friend who design it, thank's for him![]()
I'd always thought that the idea of these multi diode knife edge setups was that you added as many diodes as you fancied, and then telescoped to get the right beam diameter. Was I wrong? It's not hard to imagine that even with 4 diodes the beam is gonna be a fatty.
At that point what gains over buying a big 635 or 650 anyway? The money being thrown at some of these quads has to be significant, and I thought the whole point of 640 was for the nice beam specs?
I'm not sure to understand all you 've said...
But, no, I'm not using a telescope, the beam diameter is correct (fit in my scans mirrors) and at 10meters, the beam is like my cni green beam.
Each diode as a 1.2x2mm beam output. I've not measured divergence, but the seller of the colimators said it is 1.2mrad.
Sure, if you want to save your money, you can buy a 635 module....but you cannot have a beam quality like a quad setup (with good optics !).

Your absolutely right northy. I think there is no point of building a quad when you don,t get reasonable beamspecs. The only chance of getting good beamspecs is to use good collimators and a waveplate to stack the beams. If you do it right and spend about 400 euro,s and use 650nm diodes you still could have a quad with good beamspecs. As long as members try to save money you don,t get the quality like a Kvant. But its nice to see all those quads because it proves it can be done.![]()
well that's quite straightforward when you think about it
all is a matter of emitter size and diffraction
high power diodes have a BIG emitter size (unless focused in a small core diameter fiber, but other limitations apply) so they are really messy to deal with when using other optics than mirrors
smaller emitter size (as for our small 200mW diodes) are far more diffraction limited so you can use a telescope and, with even fatter beams, obtain collimated light over a greater distance
