Keep it up, It'll all click shortly. The only way I leaned was playing with these things too. As for the neon sign wire, It's great for HV but probably a little thin for the current. Just remember we are talking 100's of amps, over the course of milliseconds but none the less. Look at the wires going to the lamp and follow a similar gauge and insulation.
Here's some of my caps. The big one is an oil filled 2KV @ 65uF. The cool one is the little guy in front of it. It's a 900V @ 120uf film cap. 1/4 the weight of the oil filled and ultra low ESR. This cap can dump! I put two of them in series for 1800V @ 60uF.
Oh, the blue thing is a series trigger transformer.

I built this series/parallel array for .03uF @ 32kV for my Tesla coil, I'm using 4awg cable which tends to have thinner insulation so I added a layer of silicone tube over the top for extra insulation.
EDIT:
Remember if you are playing with HV capacitors to keep them shorted when not in use, even when in use a drain resistor across each individual cap is strongly advised - lest one day your hair will be curly (and possibly smoking)!

screw the tesla coil, is this a 1987 TZR 250 in the background?

sorry for spaming your post adam, it is just that bikes are my "primary field of interest" and such a classic is difficult to resist

Hey Matt....I have a few large caps I can donate to your projects. They have copper busses and bleed resistors in place...will get the values for you today. There is a 6 pack of them and a group of 4 on the other rails. You can have them FOC...I will be meeting with RGB-Gas soon to deliver some parts to him....maybe we could all get together soon and I could deliver everything at one trip. Let me know. Also have some very nice power supply units....like 12 vdc at 40 amps....very clean output and heavy.
You are the only one that can make your dreams come true....and the only one that can stop them...A.M. Dietrich
