Buying a cheap laser...

Hey guys,

I'm looking at re-engaging my laser addiction, yet want to do so rather inexpensively. I am looking at a few Chinese vendors, I am requesting CNI modules, as they appear to be the best choice coming out of CN. I've never had the opportunity to play with RGB projectors, my last toys were greenies. I'm not super technical, more into the art than the tech, so I need some advice.

One of the vendors is recommending the following for color balance..

200mw green 532nm, 1.3w red 655nm,600mw blue 447nm - All CNI

This vendor has been the most helpful, yet I'm not sure about their choice of drivers. Most vendors I've found are using 500G/500B/1000R combo's. Does the mix above seem at all like it would be to my advantage?

Why not consider 637nm red?

637nm red 480mW + 532nm green 500mW + 445nm 1W Blue is good.

No doubt I will have fun with whatever I decide to pick-up! I'm considering this projector.

From a company called "Brand New International".

Seems to be of decent quality, only thing I didn't like is that they use CNI only for green, the red and blue are in-house builds. I spoke with guy here in the States that has purchased one of these for use in his laser-tag arena, he generally had good things to say...

Any thoughts?

Aside from the fact that it's not USA legal, it's not a bad "looking" projector. I still see some issues but, it's very much a step up from a lot of the stuff we've seen coming out of China. I'd ask the manufacturer if they have other scanners besides the PT's. I'd also ask about other wavelengths of red. I'm not thrilled with the way the screws hold the case cover on but, as I said, it looks like they're putting more effort into the quality of the build. Let's hope they're equally upping the quality of modules that they're building.

Thanks for the tips Brad, I'll ask about the scanners, are these particularly bad? I have a set of CatWeasels from my last projector, these were rather inexpensive, yet they never failed me, would I be better off just using them? I think the wavelength is more a cost issue than anything else, yet I'll pose the question at least, see what they have to offer.

Scanners are PT,s DT30,s and 40,s are much better.... But nevertheless have fun with it at least you revived the hobby

They'll build it to my spec, so what I'm gathering is I want this:

DT-30s or DT-40s
637nm red 500mW
532nm green 500mW
445nm 1W Blue

Is this the recommendation? I don't want to break the bank as this is only for my enjoyment, yet I don't wanna sink a few grand into a projector that looks like crap either....
